Title: Preloading Cs:cz
Post by: Lightning Blue on March 17, 2004, 08:45:25 AM
I have not bothered to check myself, but it would seem Valve is preloading CS:CZ onto everyones system for release day.

I think it's a great idea, seeing every time something is released the bandwidth (http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html) of steam goes kaput.

My only problem is I never plan to play it so why waste my disk space, bandwidth and Valves bandwidth? They could have asked in a dialog box: Would you like to preload CS:CZ now and I would have said no! This would help dial up users too.

pretty sure it took about a gig of space on zerwalters comp, and my other friends comp wanted to update, crashed several times, and they finally have CS:CZ in the "Coming soon" part

whoopity frickin do

   o_O

[edit]
hell yeah LB, asking if you wanted it preloaded would be a excellent idea, to bad it probably won't be implimented

uh-huh, it'd be nice if they'd made it more obvious what they were doing.  It took me a couple of seconds to notice the bandwidth and realise it was installing normal CS on my harddrive without permission ><
Later I caught it doing the same with CS:Z...

Pre-loading without asking the user is bad enough.  My main problem with the system is that the download will restart automatically even when you choose to opt-out.  That REALLY angers me

it also makes you wonder as far as warezing it goes, because apparantly you get the full game, if someone breaks the encryption or whatever they have on it then its like 'here free cz', but i don't like the game so im not gunna bother searching about this

eh the CS:CZ i..played... 1 player wise was horrible, it wasn't fun at all, HL was harder then a level on hard. (not to discourage people buying it) but i hope they actually make the AI better (for hostages too  ) but if they do that the game would be pwn 1 player wise.

(<Disclaimer> i played it at a friends, im no pirate)

Close Steam.

Open up D:\Steam\SteamApps or equivilent folder.

Delete Condition Zero.gcf.

Create a .txt file, rename is Condition Zero.gcf. Set it to read-only. Should be fine.

EDIT: I just decompiled the condition-zero.gcf. Apparently the .wads, models, and graphics are encrypted, because I can't read any of them. Which means that this should be cracked within a week :D

dude, thanx! i've been looking for a way to make it stop!

i tried playing NS last night (it's been a LONG time) and to my dismay, steam wanted to DL CS AND CZ so my ping shot up to 4095 ALL the time. i was like, "that's okay, i'll just stop it". and it didn't let me stop. i am very pissed at steam right now.

but thanx for the tip. i'll try it.

Wtf are you talking about?
Theres a way to stop it without all that crap
Right click it, choose the 3rd option
Hit stop pre-loading, and delete the stored content
Worked fine for me - no trace of CZ on my comp

I did that.

Three times.

It would just randomly update CZ on me without even asking. I just saw the icon had the little dots around it, checked 'Games' and saw it was 70+% preloaded. I'd stop it and delete it, and it preloaded. In fact, while testing my instructions up there, I misnamed the blank .gcf / .txt file and it began preloading on me.

Weird
Theres no gcf file for CZ either - so it must have listened to me..
I was pretty amazed that it stopped pre-loading

You can add this fix too:
Close steam
Open steam\config\SteamAppData.vdf in any text editor - notepad may work, or it may not
Paste this over all the CZ Crap
Quote
   "Condition Zero"
   {
    "initial"  "1"
    "more_info"  "0"
    "preload"  "0"
    "final"  "0"
    "allowpreload"  "0"
   }
Or just change the 1 after preload to 0 and the 1 after allowpreload to 0

worked for me too and it hasn't tried to do it again.

as far as my experience goes, Steam is actually a very good program except for the server problems.

btw, i taught myself how to type one handed and it actually works rather well. w00t w00t

I actually didn't get the reference until gem said she didn't get the reference, but that is actually

back to killing CS!

why the hell didn't valve ask before whoring HD space? they have probably ruined the lives of many an anime fiend who have a specific amount of space

actually telling it to stop did, but steam is unstable as is and denying it access to things it thinks it has access too probably won't help it
and if it's downloaded it won't try do download ingame

I don't see what the big deal is... If you don't want CZ, all you have to do is cancel preloading and delete the GCF... Or, if it tries it again, just do was U235 said. No big deal, about five minutes of your time total.

Well I personally have a BIG problem with Valve forcing me to download something I don't want without MY permission, and then doing it again after I have told it to stop.  Beside the fact that its easily fixed, I shouldn't have to go out of my way to undo something valve purposefully did.
