Yeah, so I'm wondering. I've played the Far Cry demo, and I'm asking: What's everyone so hyped about? Granted, the level was big and detailed, but that's about the only thing that seemed particularly special to me. How does this game stand out from the crowd, how does it warrant the extra attention? It's just another shooter with real-world weaponry as far as I can see. Anyone care to explain? Or are you just as confused as I am?
-
Nope I'm as confuzzled as you are....
-
Not to mention my PC didn't particularly enjoy running it ^^;
-
the deagle feels weighty and purdy while shooting it... that should be enough!
-
I take this as a resounding "we pretty much agree with you".
-
K, whats this farcry I keep hearing about? Is it an FPS? A mod? Is it worth my time to check it out?
-
its actually pretty good. single player wise. great graphics and such, ill be trying to beat it over spring break.
and its not a mod :p huge game , comes on a dvd only. id probably say it is worth playing.
but vietnam and 2k4 definitely are better
cant wait to play them all soon
-
You're not answering my question. What's making this game special? The graphics are nice, but not overwhelming. The gameplay is "follow waypoint, kill people with Real World Guns" from what I can see. The demo hints at a token storyline. From what I can see, it's the kind that's mostly told inbetween levels, explaining why the level you are now on succeeds the previous level.
I ask again: What makes this game special? What makes it stand out from the crowd? Why are the gaming sites highlighting it like that? Bribes?
-
ill answer you after i play it more :p
-
From the Demo all I can tell you is the 'OMG SPECIAL!!!11' features are...
- Big, Fully explorable Levels
- Dodgy AI
- Your Char can't aim for beans unless he's lying down and aiming
- Indoors and Outdoors (unlike say... HL which blows at doing outdoors properly)
- "Play what you see" editor (check out the website/videos to see that one in action)
- Oh so pretty water
- Thars fish in them thar waters too
- I think I saw a seagull once
- Maybe twice
- It has vee-arkles
- They can go boom
I think that's it covered =o
To be honest most of the stuff they're blatting out the Publicity trumpet seems to be tekky boring stuff... the stuff I've forever been saying they should just slip in unnoticed while they concentrate on... I dunno... how about the frigging game?
It's amazing... Metroid Prime has ragdoll physics and yet you'd never know if you hadn't really thought about it because ninty/retro didn't make a big deal of it. They were too busy making the game into something other than yet another cheap rip-off of something that's already out =3

I want BF:V over Far Cry
BF:V will run on my PC for a start....

They both run on my PC, but first off, Far Cry has TONS of tech glitches with GeForce cards.
Secondly, no, its storyline is like a "HL on a Tropical Island" kind of thing(the 2nd demo CLEARLY hints at that).
Nother thing is, I could have done better voice acting than the main character, my Gosh....its TERRIBLE!
This and World of Warcraft, I see no reason for everyone to be excited...
-
Person 1: Pfff at WoW, it's just another MMORPG and outside of nice graphics it doesn't look like it offers anything new.
Person 2: But it's by Blizzard!
Person 1: So? The combat shown in the videos looks dull, nothing they're unleashed publicly has shown anything particularly innovative or fresh, heck it's just like every other Lame Massively Multipunter Online Ripoff Pay Game.
Person 2: But it's by Blizzard!
Person 1: What's the big deal? Ok so the Warcraft world is kinda cool and you can play a gnome which seems to give some people weird fetishes but it's just another stat-crunching borefest!!!
Person 2: But it's by Blizzard!
Person 1: Blizzard made Diablo...
Person 2: ... I hate you.

pure. gold.

So I'm basically right about Far Cry: Nothing special really, just small nifties that are made to appear like The Second Coming Of Christ.
As for WoW: Dead on Gem. Isn't being jaded about MMORPGs a wondeful thing? ^^
-
You know me fighter... always waiting on the next big thing so I can point out how it's identical to everything that came before it and is about as 'big' as a severed pinky :p
There's one mmo I'm cautiously optimistic about but we'll see how it goes...
-
mmm, severed pinkies...
-
I knew a guy who use to work on Maps for a Quake 3 game called Navy Seals Covert Operations who went and got a job at cry tek doing the maps.
I know his work so I want to see what he could do with more freedom!
-
ok after playin it a bit more heres a quick review of sorts :p
for playability, it works great on my machine (2.6 ghz p4 512mb ram and 128 mb radeon9600) at high settings. one of the most beautiful games you will ever see.
gameplay reminds me of call of duty. you start off in this place, walk around, find some guns, then it gives you objectives to go to this and that on the little mini map.
so you walk around through the forests/swim to places and basically kill whatever gets in your way.
so basically if you like going through a series of objectives while having to kills tons of people, then its pretty fun. you need a good system to run it though :p
i'll have to agree with leaderz0rz who said its mainly showing off its engine, with a so so storyline and such...

pimpin' the underdogs
Want exciting and fairly new ?

Or you'd like to become an excessively jaded MMORPG player?
www.jossh.com :p
yet another cheap rip-off of something that's already out =3
Is that a phallic smiley? =3
-
Meh I've got Battlefield Vietnam...
-
grrrr... it's a kitty smiley. Think =) but kitty.
Anyways, the MMO I'm cautiously optimistic about is Guild Wars (http://www.guildwars.com)
It has no monthly fee (instead you pay for story chapters, the great thing being that you don't actually have to buy them so you only have to pay when something is actually added basically and even then there's nothing forcing you to fork out for it... you can still keep playing alongside all your friends and have fun regardless of what you've paid for =o ), no massive level grind (there's a lil bit of levelling but it's not the point of the game... so it's over reasonably quickly), the team say the emphasis in combat is player skill rather than hours invested (omg!) and if you look at the screenies you'll notice that not only is it eye-meltingly pretty but the female avatars for the first time in recorded 3D MMORPG history, don't look hideously ugly =o
-
Well, the female characters in Lineage II aren't exactly ugly either... One might of course argue about the image that they present, but that's a different topic.
-
well ok... lineage II aside :p
It just sounded more dramatic without mentioning that. Besides, most korean MMOs have nice female avis ^^
It's the western ones that usually have ones designed by people who obviously haven't seen a woman in their lives... that or have the modelling/drawing/skinning skills of a 5 year old when it comes to the female form =P
Miraculously the male avatars in most western MMO games are fine, it's the just la femme who get done badly.
-
Its probably just a tad bit easier to represent the male shape symbolically with the bulky forms that early 3d games restricted themselves too - and most MMORPGs. Add in some stretched and filtered textures over pyramid tittys, et voila - really crappy avatars.
That, and MMORPGs for some reason feel that good models and animations are secondary, even when countless singleplayer games have done several leagues better :)
(Compare say Tomb Raider to Neo Cron - now remember just how old TR is :p ).
Edit : and before anyone rants about the humongous tittys in TR, I'm referring to modeling and animation quality, not sheer stupidity of the design ("M'kay, so this version lets give her bigger tittys and more wobbly, yay!")
-
well, despite my usual rerailment of the topic, I was really going on about the faces. I can put up with a not so well done body (as long as it's not bandy-legged, fat or overly muscley), it's the faces that are usually dire most of all.
One thing you have to keep in mind mr saltz is that tomraider only had a maximum potential rending of lara plus about 4 badguys... try putting lots of heavily modelled players in a town like you'd find in an MMO and watch your PC scream, froth at the mouth and fall over, especially in neocron where it was common to have massive crowds =3
...not that it excused 90% of the female models being so hideously ugly I ended up picking my class because it was the only pretty one :p
Seriously though, I've seen some good low poly, low detail female models in games before. I just don't know why the modellers/skinners they hire for MMO games tend to be so hopelessly inept at one thing. The monsters are usually fine and the guys are fine (not because men are supposedly simple to do either).
I dunno if it ocurred to these weirdos but few girls actually appreciate having to pick from ugly avatars; funny that, huh? =3
-
Just tried it.
Hrm, I actually kind of like it. Reminds me of Goldeneye. I really like the giant island you can explore. The indoor fighting is just more of the same.
To answer lolfighter's question, I'd say this is the main thing that stands out for me at least:
- Big, Fully explorable Levels
Not sure if I would buy it, but it certainly wasn't a waste of time
-
PC scream, froth at the mouth and fall over, especially in neocron where it was common to have massive crowds =3
$Uranium.geekpoints++;
I read that and thought "Player Character" instead of computer... I had to read it four times before I understood...
-
I thought it sucked, personally. It's a Far Cry from a winner. Another Blood II if you will. (Graphics/effects that blow you away, but the gameplay is utter crap)
-
well ok... lineage II aside :p

It's the western ones that usually have ones designed by people who obviously haven't seen a woman in their lives[...]
Conclusion:
Western game designer: Typical videogaming geekboy who goes "omg gurl" upon seeing member of other gender, proceeding to stare BELOW her neck instead of above it when speaking to her.
Eastern game designer: Gets the chicks.
