Post by: holy_devil on March 15, 2004, 02:17:28 PM
figure this is the best place to ask sooo :

i've asked some of these things before but i want to see what everyone has to say

1. if i wanted to change my windows partition to be a win partition and the rest for linux, the best thing = partition magic?

2. what distro of linux would you reccomend to a new linux user, pretty good computer with broadband(dont believe this matters though, but i'll download anything to abuse the bandwith :D), preferably with a printable install guide for n00bs

3. is it possible for me to get HL running under linux? i've heard different things, but never really got an answer

i'll edit w/ more questions as i know i'll have them :| thanks for help in advanced!

Zerwalter, get your own damned account.

That said, Partition Magic is... wierd. It's fixed my partitions without forcing a reformat and such... but.

First time I ran partition magic: I managed to somehow 'delete' my D: drive. It was just... GONE. The computer had no idea it was there. After a few days, it suddenly reappeared from a vacation, or whatever.

The second time, it managed to lose three gigs of space. Eventually I managed to coax it into putting it all back, except there's still 55 megs of undesignated space floating around in my drive...

1. I highly recommend Partition Magic. It works everytime unless you pull out the plug on your computer (and if that does happen do not panic but more importantly do not do anything to the drive. I can help you fix it :))

2. I would recommend Red Hat Linux (http://www.redhat.com/download/products.html) or Mandrake Linux (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3) for the beginning user as they come with great documentation and are rather user friendly.

3. It is possible to run HL as a dedicated server under Linux relatively easily. You can find some info here (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=half-life+dedicated+server+under+linux) I am not too sure about running as the game but you can look for info about that here (http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/hammerton-0.2/book1.html)

Good Luck and I hope this helps. If you have additional questions... ASK before you do it because you do not want a computer that does not work.

thread cleaned of  mind numbing off topic rants.

Mandrake is uber straightforward, go with that. Knoppix is a linux distro you can run off a CD, and no need to install onto the HD (not holy devil, harddrive):D

what else.. if you want to be UBER leet! go with debian.

What mind-numbing rants? i said Disk Druid is a much better program

Can't i voice an opinion? or do i just get censored?

Do you hate Disk Druid that much that you have to take it out on me?

Anyways, Disk Druid works much better, but partition magic is ok.

I'd recommend giving Knoppix a go first. I'd NEVER have tried out Linux, going through the hazzle of installing another OS is too much work "just to try something out". But with Knoppix, you're not making any commitments. I still don't use Linux, but I'm a bit more interested now that I've tried out Knoppix.

If you do get knoppix though, make sure you get the English version, instead of making the mistake of getting the German version like I did the other day when I was trying to back up some files when my comp was crapping out on me.

Unless, of course, if you can actually read German.

I hear tell of some linux users using 'gen 2' or something and speaking very highly of it... but I don't know much about linux itself outside of the fact you should get mplayer regardless of which build you nab ^^

Don't you bring your evil 'lindows' half breed GPL-breaking spawn of the dark lord into this pure thread!

And yeah, I've tried redhat out and found it quite usable. It's pretty easy to get it to read my NTFS partition also, mostly so I could listen to MP3s, because really, why else would you want to read your NTFS partition? As far as running HL for gaming and not server purposes under it, wine or a similar program MIGHT work, but you won't get the same speed as running it under win. If The Chuckster happens by the forums again, I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you all about how he got HL running under linux.

And look, I'm mentioning knoppix again here!

Yay for freebsd
Where else do you see makefiles that download the necessary packages, all by themselves?

Yes, Geminosity, Gentoo is a good distro but it's geared toward experienced users because of its manual command line installer and the fact that you have to compile everything from scratch. The end result though is a highly customized and tweaked system built from the ground up just for your PC. If you like Linux, like I did, by all means migrate to Gentoo.

Also, like many others have mentioned, I recommend Mandrake as a beginner's distro (just remember to back up first!) but it's only good use really is trying things out because of RPM dependency hell, bad security, difficulty in configuring (editing the auto generated config files or recompiling the kernel often breaks everything), and all of the bloat that gets installed (even if you go to the manual package selection and uncheck everything you still have things on there that you'll never use).

Finally, you can run Steam in Linux using WineX but it's a fight from the start as various problems occur such as low FPS, bad sound, Steam glitches, etc. I managed to get NS running (and quite playable too) but not at Windows speed.

Good luck!
