Title: Starcraft
Post by: Grimm on February 26, 2004, 12:59:27 PM
I finally found my StarCraft installer disk, so I've installed it and Brood War again. I had some fun playing against the computers in a few  games, getting used to the speed of the game and such. Now I want to get some games in with/against real people, and I'd like to do that with any of us from the LM community. If you want to get into a game at any spur of the moment time, theres a good chance you can catch me in IRC and get me into one.

I played a game with dev last weekend. He owned my though. I got to get back in the groove. I swear if you don't play an RTS game for awhile, you will be owned when you play against a person.

I'll pass. I never liked playing RTS games multiplayer.

1) If you're playing with someone better, you get your ass kicked, and you don't know why. Case in point: My first game of C&C '95 multiplayer: I'm building things, and like 30 seconds into the game (or something absurd) a chinook shows up, a commando gets out and blows my base to pieces.

2) It takes too god damned long to actually learn to be better, since each game can take so long. In FPS games, playing it is a dynamic learning experience. In an RTS game, you only figure out why you're losing after you lose a certain way 50 billion times :p

3) If you're losing, it's no fun. At least in FPS games you can run from the onos and dive headfirst into a pit.

Uranium, that's why you play with people that you know.

1) I'm definitely not that much better than you.  Nor, probably, are any of us.  Besides, we're playing against the AI for now, at least until some of us get warmed up again.

2) Take advice

3) If you're losing, you get to play "guide the desperate damaged SCV to an allied base" and then watch as they obliterate your pursuers and put you back in the game.  At least that's what we would have done for Leaderz0rz if he had put an scv in the dropship which was his last remaining unit :p

I think the most players starcraft could hold in one round is 8 players, so it will be 4v4 or 2v2.

The only Multi-Player RTS I like is C&C/RA/TS/RA2 mainly because it lends itself to multiplayer fairly well.

No offense to all you StarCraft lovers, its a great game but it rubs me the wrong way. I want Action not sitting on my ass for ages trying to ammass an army.

That only really happens on the money maps Ven. It can happen on the Blizzard maps when playing against computers, but if you're playing against a human on a Blizzard map, it's not very smart to try to build tons of units.

If you've ever seen the streaming video feeds from matches in Korea, you'll see that it isn't always the largest army that wins a game.

It's funny, while playing with Jhunz and Leaderz0rz last night I was reminded of some funny stuff my friend did once: I had downloaded and installed NS on his computer to introduce him to it (this is back before 2.0 was released), so I go aliens. This is before I got into the habit of using a mic and headset, so his headset isn't plugged in but the mic is. So at a few random moments throughout the game, he grabs the mic and hits the voicechat key and yells "Spawn More Overlords!" in a deep, menacing voice. Was funny as hell for us.

speaking of editing, its been alittle over a year since i ended mapping, anyone know the name of the campaign editor( its not the original, its a more advanced one where u can do all sorts of things with the 7 -8 diff programs that come with it i.e.: build bunkers or buildings on sides of cliffs or in water, put eggs in random places, more trigger options etc.)

I used to play starcraft, ^_________________^

it was all about teching with terran, starting with a specific build patter that I have forgot and halfway to seige tanks and goliaths be sure to drop rush on the opponents peons with the motorbykes, and then seige tanks and goliaths with drop ships and tear into the mofo with the stalled economy

I never understood the point of the vulture... someone enlighten me? They make decent scouts, but once you get wraiths... well, wraiths are better in every way.

Drop some mines, then the vulture can't drop anymore, and you get to watch as the mines either:

1) Chase after an enemy for a while, then lose track and burrow somewhere where no one would ever go.

2) Chase enemies right into your defending forces, then blow everyone up.

3) Blow each other up.

Then the vulture has the annoying pea-shooter, and it's as weak as paper...

I never had much luck with siege cannons either, outside of proxy base defense, or shelling down structures. They could shoot farther then they could see, so I'd always end up with lots of dead marines, lots of dead zerg, and my siege cannon blowing everything away indescriminantly. Plus, in 'tank' mode, the cannon lost ALL it's sex appeal. *PEWM*... *PEWM*... please...

I now officially hate starcraft in every respect.

When, oh when, will someone make an RTS that's not about mass, but about tactics and strategy?

Oh wait, they have..

Starcraft does have strategy, every unit has a counter and that unit has a counter and so on. Mass attacks don't always work cause there's always a way to counter something in starcraft.

Myth m'dear. Gets rid of the tedious base building. It's all units and tactics.

Or Warcraft 3, Legionnaired.

And Satanic Monkey is right, every unit has a counter. I could mass Zerglings but they'll be slaughtered by upgraded marines in bunkers, mass Carriers to get blown from the sky by Scourges, etc etc etc.

But those 20 archers all use up food supply, which is already much lower in WC3 than in Starcraft, and you have to pay the upkeep cost. And aside from the fact that Heros aren't meant to be their own armies, they're used in conjunction with your army to get a bit of an edge.

I have warcraft 3 and starcraft, but i think i prefer starcraft more... The Heros in warcraft make things too complecated, while building the base you need to be sure to make a mini-army so you can upgrade your hero, leaving your base close to helpless from a rush attack. However, if you're too slow, and your hero sux, than you're gona have problems in the long run. And of course, if he dies that's an extra couple hundred gold to ressurect him.

I like um both, but i don't like the idea of mixing an RTS and an RPG game while trying to out manuver the enemy at the same time. WAY too confusing.  :p

Google for "Starcraft X-Tra Editor", "ISOM Editor", "GUEdit".. I don't think you need much more then that..
Make sure to protect any public maps.. because someone will modify it, and make a lame version if you dont..

I'm almost done with a map for BW, its like the call for help ones

That's not strategy, not at all, that's just game balance. There's actually not that much strategy in starcraft, not as much as there could be at least. Arbiters requires strategy. Bunkers full of marines shooting zerglings isn't strategy. It's hard to explain, so I'll say it how I do best: if you think simple balance is stragety, you're stupid.

So what you're saying is that sophisticated, advanced units don't matter. All that matters is mass. Couldn't agree more. The good ol' "kekeke zerg rush ^____________^" is alive and well. He who wins is he who has the bigger army in shorter time. That may be strategy, but not tactics. And frankly, tactics are more fun. Gimme Myth any day.

Take my semi-bro: Unbeatable in Starcraft, which is why I rarely played against him. He didn't go for early rushes, but climbed the tech tree as fast as he could, then set up unbeatable unit combos. Until I did a kekeke zerg rush ^________________^ on him. He had no chance at all. Give me Myth with its fixed amount of units, the lack of a base and the comfortably paced, extra-tactical gameplay any day. If I want to play "economy management", I'll take Sim City instead.

Gotta run, it's full of Daewoos outside.

Nah, just turned out to be the korean mafia. Seems they didn't agree with my sentiments on Starcraft. Nothing bad, had a little chat, exchanged opinions, all in good spirit. The doctor says he can put my kneecaps back on, provided I can find them.

The chance of someone called "lolfighter" being me is pretty high, too. One of the advantages of this nick is that it's so ridiculous, people can't make themselves plagiarize it.
