but Browser Skillz dude, how is firefox better than firebird?
-
And all of the points you listed are also in Opera. So nyah :p
-
what the? it remembered all my firebird passwords and favourites and everything o.O
~is scared by the psychic program~
so what've they fixed/changed? I can't see or feel any differences from firebird except the icon's changed ^^;

opera is not free, legally
also firefox has:
Firefox, released Monday, improves upon its predecessor with a new download manager aimed at tracking multiple downloads, easier bookmark handling, a new installer for Microsoft Windows users, and improved handling of extensions, Mozilla says.

yes, i am aware of the fact that opera is free with ugly ads
yes, i am aware of the fact that opera can be free without ads, but that's just mean/not nice/bannable
and firefox loads itself and pages faster

And, if you just use Mozilla, you get an email client too!

yes, i have thunderbird, it's quite nice and easy to use for what i need it for. heheh, i'm browsing the forums without a mouse since my brand spanking new mouse is charging :S
-
Define ugly.
There's one banner in the top right in a location where I would never look anyways. o_O
ogogog Opera
-
Opera also has ze mail client.
ogogog Opera

You got no l33t points unless you install mouse gestures (http://optimoz.mozdev.org/).
Once is started using them, I've never been able to stand a browser without them.
-
Opera has mouse gestures already installed :p
Browser war! Browser war!
p.s. I paid for my copy, and it was worth it

er.. Not psychic.. Just reading off the same profile.. since the profiles are stored outside the programs actual folder, no matter what folder you intall it to, it will always have all that stuff stored.
Hell.. I have yet to even figure out where the profiles are held.. I just know they aren't in the firebird/firefox folder o_O

"Sinners, repent! The world is coming to an end, all the signs are right! Fire and brimstone will rain upon the unjust! But YOU can save yourself! Just use Mozilla Firefox, Now With a Funkier Name, and you can laugh at the unclean IE-users boiling away in hell while you, one of the 192 thousand that can be saved, will soar to the heavens to live an eternal life of peace and happiness and Mozilla Firefox, Now With a Funkier Name."
Has anyone noticed how the followers of the Mozilla Cult spread their teachings with almost fanatical devotion? :p
[size=0]Should I stop posting abruptly, look for me in the subterranean passages of the Mozilla Cult monastery. I hope there'll be anything left of me that can be carried without aid of a bucket.[/size]
-
lol!
I've used opera, IE and mozilla's firebird/fox and to be honest this is just the one I was most comfortable with in the end =3
Opera's ok but it just kinda feels clunky plus there's no way I'm paying for it just to stop the top part take up so much of my screen with it's ad. As far as I'm concerned the browser better be free with no ads or I'll just end up using those that are =p
Not that I'm a cheapskate or anything, just that I don't view browsers in particular as something we should have to pay for.
-
so.. just explain to me why paying for a browser is better than not paying for one with the exact same features?
-
Obviously you canadians don't understand the american concept of money being god. Ergo, anything that costs money is better than anything that doesn't cost money. And anything that costs MORE money is better than anything that costs less money. Yes, our corporations pwn us.
-
Hush, you. I'm trying to start a holy war here
-
this sounds cool , i might actually get it :p
Edit : I have to uninstall IE first?
-
Nah you can have IE still installed. In fact, you can't really uninstall IE from any version of windows after 95 without some tricky finagling. But whether you'll ever want to touch IE anymore after trying a good browser is another question entirely...
-
You said 0.9 was released...says. 0.8 on the site......im confuzzled.....
-

IE is an integrated part of windows, so no, you don't need to uninstall. Unless of course you're using the mac or linux version, then do so if you wish.
Otherwise, Firefox will detect if it's the default browser, tell it yes, and all your programs will remember it as such. Now mIRC etc open links in firefox, not IE. :)
-

Eh... BM can't count. It's .8
I'm of the hardcore group that sticks with the actual 'mozilla' browser instead of the more pretty firebird/firefox browser. I know they're almost the same, but mozilla has a silghtly more in-depth/slightly less user-friendly interface, which appeals to the geek in me.
-
this is really cool , 1 gripe though , i dont like that google thing in the corner. How do i get rid of it?
-
IE is like a virus... you can't uninstall it.
One measly ad banner isn't a good reason to poo-poo a browser. You aren't going to catch the plague from looking at an ad here and there.
Now if I could only configure mIRC to launch links in Opera my life would be complete.
-
HOW TO GET RID OF GOOGLE BAR PLZ!
(and this really bold text thing , you know it usually blinks on IE when your writing text , its too bold and annoying , how i change it? )
Edit : OOO shiny themes..... B)
-
AAAHHH!!! MY HAND!!! THE PLAGUE!!!!
~ahem~
anyways, I'm pretty sure you can get rid of the google bar... damned if i actually remember how but I have a vague memory of fiddling with it in the past ^^;
I don't find it that bothersome anyways, in my setup it's just a tiny thing that sits at the end of the URL bar where the go button is usually wasting my space =D
-
1 gripe though , i dont like that google thing in the corner. How do i get rid of it?
Open the View menu, go to Toolbars, and then Customize. A list of possible toolbar items will appear. Drag the "Google thing" into this list.
-
woot thanks!
-
any more arguments for opera?
oh yeah, bm <3 ff's radial context menu. it's like mouse gestures except you dont have to memorize everything
stuff: http://www.radialthinking.de/radialcontext/ (http://www.radialthinking.de/radialcontext/)
-
Ah, so it's like mouse gestures for kids eh? Like with training wheels on? That's nice. I like being able to open windows in new tabs by right clicking the link and moving up, myself. And closing windows with down, left. And opening new windows with down. And going forward with right and back with left.
I now declare an argument over mouse gestures vs. radial context menus.
I now declare myself the winner of that argument. :D
-
I go back by clicking mouse button 4 and forward with button 5.... mouse buttons win :p
-
what in gods name is a 'mouse gesture ' ?
-
basically a mouse gesture works by you holding a mouse button and doing a movement, like down then to the left or up or right then down followed by you letting go of the button. Each 'movement' or gesture is recognised for different actions like drawing an L with the mouse as your gesture could refresh the page for example.
Hope that's a clear enough explanation ^^;
-
see with radial context you have your mouse gestures
forward is right
back is left
scroll is down-left
but if you dont remember something (like copy) you just click and look for the icon. copy seems to be right when you are hovering over selected text, cut is left ... see, i didnt have to go through pages of text to figure those two out
-
Obviously you missed the part where I declared myself winner of the argument. Because my mouse gestures work without having a goofy little menu that pops up. So that means I look cooler. And that means I gets all da ladies.
You can't argue with that: ALL DA LADIES.
-
no you can't
[edit]
Hi niteowl! I can see you looking at the thread!
[/edit]
-
i've always thought that using the mouse for most things was eschewed (proper usage?) by most geeks... now you want me to use mouse gestures where i can use the keyboard?!?!?
i CHALLENGE YOUR GEEKLY HONOUR!! BOB SIR!!
-
I perfer Internet explorer. It's built in and has always worked for me!
-
that's what I said until I actually tried firefox ^~
-
tabbed browsing, pw remembering, and pop up blocker make firebird/firefox whatever they wanna call it, the browser of choice for me.
-

You find me a web browser with GOOD keyboard to browser integration, and I'll love you forever. The web is SO mouse oriented. And trying to tab through links until you find the right one is a massive pain. Believe me, I sometimes have to work on computers here with busted mouse ports and no USB or working serial ports. Browsing the web with nothing but keyboard takes an eternity and then some.
It's sad really. All those keys on the keyboard just wasted and totally inactive when you're not typing in a text box.
-
I just downloaded firefox today and so far I like it <3
-

Wow I want- oh wait, I already have all three of those...
-
And you only have to run seven extra things in your task tray to manage it, right? :p
-

oh, then you will LOVE firefox
in options turn 'find as you type' on
then you just type the text for a link, like 'off topic' and hit enter ... bewm
hotkeys for find as you type:
esc == abort
backspace == durr
' == start with links only
/ == start with all text
[enter] == click selected link
the last two are only needed if you have 'find links only' on/off
so, with ff/fb you can cruise the forums with almost no mouse usage
make with teh lurve
oh, MORE stuff i found.
a plugin called ad blocker prevents images matching certain filters from being displayed. haven't seen an ad in days now (unless you count opera which has ads built in)
-
Oh ya, I've got the text find stuff in Mozilla too. I was hoping for some more stuff than that. I really can't think of what, but even with the auto-text-find stuff, there's still a lot of keyboard doing nothing.

windows mousekeys?
-
Note that one could block opera's adservers from the hostfile if one really wanted to.
-
note that one doesn't even have to do that in the first place if they're using firefox instead of opera ^~
-
Note that every single other thing that BlackMage has mentioned as an advantage of Firefox is also built into Opera, so I thought I would qualch his whining about the ads.
-
Yeah, my mozilla blocks ads for me. <3 Right click ad, block images from this server. Done! I hardly see anything on most major sites anymore.
-
not seen an ad in years *hugs firewall* . I dont really see the point of mouse gestures , make a funny sign with your mouse to refresh a page and you could just.....y'know...press f5
-
Yeah... I mostly only use the mouse to click on hyperlinks or highlighting text. Everything else I do through keyboard shortcuts.
It's really disturbing when you're telling your GUI-oriented user friend to Cut and Paste some text off a website and then watch them use the Edit menu.
