Title: Coffee Game
Post by: confused! on May 20, 2005, 03:11:42 PM
Ok, as some of you know i am a restaraunt manager.

At work we have 5 coffee pots arranged in the following manner

{decaf}{regular}{regular}{regular}{regular}

As the day goes on pots of regular are pulled until ultimately only 3  remain two regular and one decaf. ( if this seems excessive, please note that during breakfast this is roughly a five minute supply of  coffee, and that by teh tim i left work this after noon we had sold 1300  orders in 9.5 hours)

Normally one would assume that the pots would be labeled by the type of coffee contained therein. However, the store I work at is to insane for that. Thus, they are both labeled  and color coded. Decaf is tagged either yellow or pink. Regular is on white paper. (The labels have the time the coffee is too cold to serve, 2 hours after it has been brewed)

long ago some one hit on the idea that regular and decaf were crappy things to write and thus the game was born.

The four Regular pots will have  4 related thing written on them.
The fifth, the decaf pot, has a word which is similar but different .

the goal is to figure out why the decaf word doesn't fit.

the pots are removed by the same person who wrote them, the shift manager, thus the final 3 pots should demonstrate the difference better than the initial 5.

To play the game on the forum one will start with 5 pots

demonstrated as shown
Code: [Select]
{decaf}      {regular}     {regular}     {regular}    {regular}
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gorbachev|   Lenin    |    Stalin   |   Brezhnev  |  Krushchev

in order to simplify the  regular pots will be removed from right to left, Resulting in the final group being  lenin ,stalin and gorbi.

(the connection here Soviet leaders, the exception ended teh union.)

finally this is the l ast trio fo todays coffe pots at work:
(http://pictures.confusionville.net/cofsample.png)
(think c++)

so the follwing thread is hopefully to make us all try to out fox each other in teh coffe game.

the person who gets the connection of the preceeding  examples gets to set up th next set of pots.

So, this is the  puzzle:
Code: [Select]
{decaf}      {regular}     {regular}     {regular}    {regular}
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tsushima  |    Kursk   |  Leningrad  |   Berezina   |  Khalkin-Gol

They're all locations of battles, generally involving Japan or Russia, however the only odd one out I can see is that Berezina is a river while the others are towns/cities.

Super neat game! You do know, confused, that is is a type of question on an IQ test right?

The answer is monkeys

Hmmm, a little more research makes me realise something more obvious: Tsushima is the only battle on the waters. The others are land or air.

(Cheers DHP for reminding me the decaf has to be the odd one out.)

EvilLinkz, you are very, very close.

What else is exceptional about tsushima?

The Japanese managed to win? They slaughter the Russians at a ratio of 1 Japanese death to 10 Russian deaths (600:6000).

Hurry up!! I can't wait!! And bonus meeces for posting one just on logic (no need to google it). Oh fine, while I'm waiting, i'll post something out of TURN! (unofficially, of course! muAHhahAHHA!). Of course, knowing me, I'll prolly put a puzzle that you have to look up :S
Code: [Select]
{unknown} {unknown} {unknown} {unknown}  {unknown}
---------------------------------------------------
  Grizzly|  Moose  |  Panda  | Giraffe |  Tiger

Ok, you'll most certainly have to look this up, SHAME ON ME!

Code: [Select]
{decaf}   | (Second difference:1,32,93,184,305) + (65536^¼)½
{regular} | x² - 31 + 30
{regular} | 0.5 to the -sin + sin90
{regular} | (5 x 6) + (369630/555)/666
{regular} | a² + b² = 5.5677643628300219221194712989185²

Jesus that took a long time, damn formatting...

...hope you like numbers :o

Darn, I fear I made this too specialised :|

A second difference is the difference of the differences between two numbers.... in the case of that sequence.... it's "30" :o

In that case I have a guess about the difference.

the first adds a number which is not one or zero.
thats as good as i can do becasue im a worthless math kid having not even seem an equation in 3 years. woo yeah.

Hmmm, this seems to have become a multi-question thread. I blame Nightowl for being impatient D:

the giraffe is the only animal that wont become aggressive if attacked. it will run away. it's also the only species native to the southern hemisphere. it's also the only animal named that doesnt have any sort of toe-like appendage on its feet (yes, moose do have a toe-like appendage directly above their hooves).

oh yeah, and evil, the reason we're answering niteowl's question instead of yours is because yours involves math. i mean cmon man...im a teacher and i wont even stoop to the level of doing math for fun.

The moose.  Its the only one with antlers.

"Tiger" is the only word that contains only unique letters (if panda were spelled paanda then tiger would be the only one without a double-letter)

Hm, seems like there is going to be no one getting the answer I'm thinking of. BIG hint, it has to do with evolution, and digestion.

Tiger is the only one that doesn't like pizza.

Post by: CryForMe on May 26, 2005, 05:35:30 PM
um...well theres several possibilities. the giraffe has uniquely evolved to be able to reach its food source at the tops of trees, which, through their own genetic evolution, have become taller over the ages. pandas and moose and giraffes are all herbivores, while grizzlies and tigers are omnivorous, having a much more scrutinizing digestive system that will allow them to process various types of intake. pandas have evolved a unique claw on their forepaws that allows them to dig out the center meat of bamboo stalks and other closed-capsule plants.
each animal has its own unique evolutionary quirks involving digestion and eating, so which is it. give it up already :p
EDIT:
you also broke the game code by not labeling which was decaf/regular. thats the point. you have to figure out why the different one is different. not which AND why.

i give up, here's mine. it's a lot simpler if you know your languages.

glob() <-- decaf
rtrim() <-- reg
str_rot13() <-- reg
explode() <-- reg
nl2br() <-- reg

yeah, i was trying to make it harder.

anyhooo answer coming up:

It's the panda, who's a secondary herbivore, it was actually evolved to eat MEAT. But got stuck in a place where it can only eat fricking bamboo shoots. Forcing it to consume 14kg (30ish lbs) of shoot a DAY just to survive.

Yeah, that's why it's endangered. Bloody evolution.
