I've regularly seen Lunix full to the 16 player limit, but I've never experienced lag. Shouldn't the player limit be higher? To me, 8vs8 is minimal for a good game.
Discuss! :help:

Actually NS is ideal at 7v7. It used to be higher, much higher, but when you get larger then 8v8 marine resources flood in, and alien resourses trickle in.
See here for more info.

Yeah I think we might be able to squeeze by at 10 v 10, but anything bigger than that gets ridiculous. Those massive pubs like beannet with 32 slots are nearly unplayable. Aliens get NO res even if they have every node on the map. Marine comm has to be godlike to cover that many people. HA trains become too expensive to be reasonable. And aliens can just skulk the whole game and still take marines down by sheer force of numbers pouring into an area.

...I don't think Lunixmonster needs to change. Change is bad. We fear change.

Oh, last I heard 10vs10 was considered "balanced". Anyway, this sums it up the best:
Having a slightly higher playercount than what you're aiming for is a good idea actually, it means that you don't drop below the desired playercount as soon as someone leaves.
EDIT: Gah, I knew I should have used the search function! Someone ban me!! :(

do you know of 20 people who you WANT playing luni at the same time? i can thnk of about 16 regs...
-
I believe that quote by Sancho was from me, and I stand by it: We aim for 7v7, at full capacity we are at 8v8. Anything more and the game devolves from strategy and "zone control" to "olo deathmatch kekeke".
-
yes, the whole expense thing. so don't ask for more slots unless you wanna pony up the dough :)
i really just posted to say i've played a 20-24 person server where it WAS strategy and such. it's just incredibly exhausting as commander. and brutally devastating when the aliens work together (lerks, gorges, skulks, healspray... you get the picture).
i used to play on large servers from tmie to time cuz i thought it'd be an easy, relaxing comm win (slash and burn, upgraded to the gills), but it's not the case if you go to well established servers with lots of regs. the game actually is TOTALLY different. novel, at first, then, painful, very very painful.

Actually, expense is no longer an issue here as we are running the server on a dedicated box, so we could have any playercount we wanted.
I just love 8v8, myself.

:o!!
i wouldn't mind playing a 10v10 game the odd time. but, yeah, i enjoy 8v8 far more. doesn't get too.. hectic. nothing like a 10v10 to get my commrage up though.

In that case, by my own logic, pushing it up to eighteen players might be what you want.

Actually 9v9 wouldn't be bad. It would allow for even squads pushing in two directions. Maybe I'm just too obsessive-compulsive, but I hate having a squad of 3 and a sqaud of 4. Two squads of 4 = winnar.
Rereading that... Yes, I am CLEARLY too obsessive-compulsive.
-
But do you really want two more newbies? ;)
-
I think its good where it is, its quite often that the server gets completely full, and theres some serious resistance when theres 7 Marines fighting you.
-
8 v 8 is perfect for pub play TBH.

Just put a base guard. Two squads of three, with a guy with three packs of mines at base, patrolling three resnodes. Take right care of that OCD.
