Post by: Dead_Meat on May 11, 2005, 09:04:50 AM
hey i'm about to build a new comp for work so i dont have to keep lugging mine back and forth. I use autocad and do 3d piping drawings.

i would like to hear some opinions on proccessors in my current computer i have an amd athlon xp 3000 running at 2.17 GHz

i'm trying to decide between getting an athlon 64 processor or getting a pentium 4.

which processor do yall think would be better?

From what I hear (which might not necessarily be true), Pentiums are better for general work, with Athlons being more suited to gaming.
Although I'm not sure, and I use a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz - mainly for gaming.

I also recommend 64 bit.
That and at least 1gb of memory.

I wouldn't go with a bundle package.. check out whats available unbundled.

Dont forget some nice thermal compound... I got Arctic Silver 5, and ArcticClean to get rid of the old thermal shit.

If your going 64bit, you might as well go PCI-E, instead of AGP

64 all the way man...

also go ati on the video...

I say pci-e just so you can upgrade it later.

Yes, I'd definitely advise going with an Athlon 64
The 3200+ should be around 200$ and the 3000+ is ~150, with an nForce4 Ultra mobo being ~110 or a plain nForce4 board being ~80.
It'll almost certainly be faster, not to mention you have an easy upgrade path to dual core if you want to later, since it uses the same socket. You might as well go with PCI-E in that case, as there's not too much of a reason not to. (And it looks like there are some nearly identical PCI-E quadros, at nearly the same price, but I really have no clue about workstation cards)
Only other observation is I have no clue how much I'd trust the power supply that comes with that case, as it seems to be genericly branded by a case manufacturer I've never even heard of.

I reccommend you give us a ceiling, and quick!

Otherwize you get lots of great advice from nerds that does little but help you build an 8000 dollar benchmark smasher.

I ordered a "new" ATI video card from TigerDirect. I received a card that had not been manufactured by ATI, and which had some weird double-slot plate on the front that didn't even fit into the computer without being bent. When I called their customer service, they were morons who wouldn't replace the card with what I had actually ordered, since they probably never had a genuine ATI card to begin with.

If you order all parts for a machine from them, you're really pushing your luck. Check out the 500+ bad reviews: http://www.pricegrabber.com/rating_getrevi...0/form_keyword= (http://www.pricegrabber.com/rating_getreview.php/lastrec=8525/order=DESC/sort=2/retid=500/form_keyword=)

Dual core means two processors in one.  Of course thats going to preform better then a single core processor.

Newegg owns TBH.  Makes me wish we had a reasonable canadian equivalent (since they are asses about shipping to canada)

newegg rocks!  I've build two comptuers from them and buy all my hardware from them.  Usually end up getting it a lot cheaper than best buy as well.

the way i understand it they pny quatro card is designed more for workstation graphics like cad aplications and not really for vidio games.

i'm building this comp mainly for work to run autocad 2004 i do alot of 3d piping drawings and when i render a 3d model it really bogs down the comp
most of the systems i've worked on have had the latest and greatest video game card in them and still had trouble rendering the 3d objects in autocad.
My current vidio card is an ati radeon 9800pro and it has trouble rendering my 3d dwgs. so i am really wanting to try one of the pny quatro cards.
