You're right.. I didn't know that until just now..

Camel spiders are not spiders. They are sometimes called "wind scorpions" but they are not scorpions either. They are a different species of arthropod called solipugids which are not venomous or have silk-making capacity.

Perdy little thing, aint it?

Don't worry Sonic, I seriously hate spiders too. I can't stand them, and whenever I look at pictures of spiders or such I always lift up my legs off the ground. (Dont Laugh At Me)

I have a phobia-like fear of spiders too.  >_<

Post by: Mac on March 26, 2005, 12:35:12 AM
I also hate spiders, but it's not a phobia. I think 'stink bugs' (leaf-legged bugs) are much worse. Tons of those stupid things around here.

fear of spiders or Arachnophobia is the 4th most common phobia on earth. it is only beaten by fear of snakes (Ophidiophobia), fear of heights (Acrophobia, Altophobia, Batophobia, Hypsiphobia or Hyposophobia) and topping the list is fear of death (Thanatophobia). The least common phobia on earth is the fear of the collor yellow (Xanthophobia).
Now dont you all feel better about yourselves.
Wimps.

I have a fear of heights, dark and/or deep water, and I'm claustrophic. Back to spiders, though, one bit the back of my hand a while back and left a scar. One reason I hate them.

i have really bad luck with spiders, so i should be afraid of them, but im not. been bitten by a blackwidow twice (no, they dont really kill you, you just get woozy) and bitten by a brown recluse on the shoulder and had a big chunk of my shoulder skin turn black and flake off (grew back of course, just nasty to watch). but i like spiders. they eat mosquitos. and i hate ****ing mosquitos.

Seems like those recluse spiders really love you.

When I was in Uni I was working on a modified flu virus that caused your body to synthesise recluse venom as well as produce more virus.

Interestingly, the only real treatment for recluse venom is to pump you full of pain killers and muscle relaxants, and just wait for bits to drop off. Even then, the muscle cramps are quite severe and iirc the venom isn't totally negated.

Have to love spiders, they don't mess about.

Everyone put on a pair of 3d glasses, and click the LINKEH! (http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artmay00/zebraw.html)

Reactions to the black widow’s venom include increased body temperature and blood pressure, profuse sweating, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, and pain and swelling around the bite. Nasty bit of venom there, good that you don't react severely to it.

If you did that, about 100 spiders would come scurrying out of it and shoot up your trouser leg.

That's if he stepped on an egg sack. I think he meant the "butt" of the spider, from which the silk for web-making is secreted. Am I right? But yes, I've seen a hatching egg sack before, and it's quite grotesque.. hundreds of tiny spiders scurrying this way and that.. =/

Thi is what happens when you SLEEP AT NIGHT!
Title: Spiders
Post by: Mac on March 26, 2005, 02:48:55 PM
Well, that's a bit exaggerated, but spiders will pay people visits at night occasionally, sometimes biting them and feeding on their blood. Reactions/wounds caused by spiders and their bites are rarely severe, however, as this most commonly occurs with house spiders (non-venomous, usually very small, and basically harmless). In some cases a person's skin around a bite may become slightly red and irritable, but most bites go completely unnoticed.

Is the myth about people swallowing an average of so many spiders at night true, btw?

Its pretty true, your mouth tend to hoover up stuff.

Awesome pic btw.

Actually the abdomen of a spider is mostly its heart and lungs.

Except the ones that carry their egg sacs with them, in which case they probably WILL explode into a small mass of skittering arachnids.

Hmm.. I was thinking of the sack things that spiders leave in their webs, and after a while they hatch and tons of their babies crawl around the web and make their way out into the world to make webs of their own and master the ways of the spider.

I'm reminded of the time I was very little, earlier than kindergarten even, and I was walking in the woods with my mother. I felt something around the crochtoral region, looked down, and there were 4-5 caterpillars that had crawled up my pants. One of the scariest times of my early childhood.

p.s. - which pic? I love 'em both. Big Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri fan!

No, I don't enjoy getting stabbed/bitten/chomped/nibbled on/sucked at by big hairy things.

That reminds me of this time, when I was like 5 or something. I was in this back yard just walking around, all of a sudden this dragonfly zooms right in front of my eyes,  I had never seen one before so my reaction was to be scared ****less. So I scream, turn around and start running. BAM Face first into a wall.

Got a nice scar that reminds me to look which way im running before running :)

Bahahaha, the thought of that just owns. "Waaaaaaaah, dragonfly!" *smack*

That said, dragonflies somebody can be rather unnerving. It was summer, so we were eating outside, and this dragonfly shows up and starts zooming around. It flew in a fixed pattern, which included zooming right at my sister and turning away mere inches from her face. And it kept doing this for five minutes straight.

And Nooblet, I thought your spider had pink toes or something?
