Title: Go To colleg?
Post by: TheMunch8 on January 03, 2005, 11:01:36 PM
I am starting a comprehensive list of which colleges STEAM work with and which colleges it does not. If you go to college, and live or have lived in the dorms, PLEASE HELP ME OUT.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...threadid=222072 (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=222072)

IF you dont' have a steampowered.com forum account, just post here. I will add it there. Thank you.

The Kings Univesity College, Edmonton Alberta: Doesn't work
Reason: Port filtering applied to all non HTML traffic to prioritize "work" functions, thus universities 2 Megabit line is always too clogged to run other port functions

University of Alberta: works like you wouldn't belive... I had a friend who played counterstrike via wireless on his laptop for an entire history class.  The place is running more fiber optics than a raisenbran factory on the sun!  Last year it was running the fastest counterstrike server in canada out of the dorms.

Michigan State University
East Lansing, Michigan

Steam and basically anything else works fine with consistently low pings during all times of the day.

Munch, you don't have any differentiation between which universites steam works in or doesn't in your steampowered post...  Kings university DOESN'T work with steam...

[edit] to clairfy, it doesn't compleatly block steam ports, it just filters them so they run too slow to acctually play on...  It took me 3 hours to verify my HL2 copy over steam from kings (to VERIFY, not to download, I installed via DVD).

This would acctually look really good done officially on a website somewhere... that way prospective students from anywhere could look it up with ease, and it could be somewhat of a qualitative statement that universites and colleges could use to determine thier standing in the gaming world...  Of course the whole thing would take alot of work, and thus it will probably never be done, just like the many many other things gaming nerds could have done to improve thier standing on sociaty but haven't.

No, but I had options, and the fact that steam doesn't work means I probably can't do alot of other things I would want to be able to access on the system...  Any ISP that doesn't allow steam is going to be frustrating for any power user, not just obsessive gamers.

William and Mary- Steam works.  Never had a problem with pings.  Just as your computer is reasonably secure, you can do most anything.
