Title: Half Life 2 Offers
Post by: Grimm on September 29, 2004, 11:29:45 AM
From Half Life Fallout (http://www.hlfallout.net/viewnews.php/7470/).

Quote
Retail Boxes
Standard Edition — includes HL2 and CS:Source. Ships on six CDs, in one of three box-art packages (Gordon, Alyx or the G-Man).

Collector's Edition — includes Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source, a Half-Life 2 T-shirt and a Prima book sampler. Ships on a single DVD.
Steam Packages
Bronze — HL2* and CS:Source.

Silver — HL2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam.

Gold — HL2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam, Complete Strategy Guide from Prima Games, 3 different Half-Life 2 posters, Half-Life 2 hat, Half-Life 2 postcard, Half-Life 2 stickers, Half-Life 2 Soundtrack CD, Chance to win a trip to Valve! (1 trip offered for every 5000 Gold packages purchased).
*To be made available upon product's release.

Personally, I like the idea of owning an actual hard copy of the game just in case something goes wrong with my connection or there's a problem with Steam, which is why I would get the Collector's Edition. However, the Gold package does look very nice, and that soundtrack CD is very enticing because I'm a major music freak. I don't care all that much for a hat, CS:S, or DoD:S, but I really like the soundtrack and posters. If they release the soundtrack disk separately, I'd rather pick up a copy of that and the Collector's Edition. Of course, the price of each deal will influence my decision as well.

Id get the retail. Though i dont quite understand this. If you just get retail you can't play mods such as DOD? etc?

id just prefer the "buy in 1 box at the local computer store" deal :(

I find it shifty that they're charging extra for mods. I hope this isn't the start of a trend. Especially considering that these are all HL1 codebase, converted in 'a few weeks' if we are to believe the hype. Now if they want to charge money for actual CS2, that makes sense. But charging for what is essentially a free mod ported (with supposed ease) to a new engine rubs me the wrong way.

Whatever is cheapest that gets me a hard copy and a manual. Personally, I care very little for HL2 at all anymore. I'm saving my money for the WoW uberset.

Some of the Gold additions sound cool, but I don't know if I want to pay that much (since it sounds like it'll be a lot). If the Silver/Gold edition are too much, I'll get the collectors edition. I don't want 6 CDs.

EDIT: The Bronze, Silver and Gold edtions have something to do with Steam. So then I think I'll pass on that.

I'm partial to the collector's edition as well, for the DVD if nothing else.  But I don't know just how much having that is worth to me.  The T-shirt and book sampler (?) are hardly convincing besides.

I guess HL1: Source would be cool, but how many times have I replayed through that game already?  A whole lot.  I'm sure most of us can say that.

Not to mention that ATI voucher.  LOL, I had almost forgotten about that.

Actually, I never did completely finish the single player story for Halflife; I got as far as Big Momma on Zen, then for some reason didn't play it afterwards. I recently tried going through it again, but for some reason it constantly crashes on me completely when I pick up the crowbar for the first time. So Halflife 1: Source does sound very nice; I'll get some motivation to actually finish the game and get to play it with the new graphics and physics.

Yes, but many of us have CD drives that also read DVDs (hence CD/DVD ROM Drive)

Given further consideration, if I was presented with HL:Source, I probably would go back and play it one more time.  And then wish there was OpFor:Source.

A CD drive that also reads DVDs would be a DVD drive. I've never heard of a DVD drive that can't read CDs. :)
