I to suffer from the same problem, IRC is difficult to use thru proxy's as well becuase of the delays >_<

Check the gamesurge forums, or  pm me and I'll ask in #support.. I though there were some servers running on weird ports.. 7070, iirc..

X-Chat (http://www.xchat.org), the client I use, has built in proxy support. It's worth checking out.
