Title: Dewm Three, oooooooooooh....
Post by: confused! on August 04, 2004, 06:01:50 PM
for those of you who dont know doom three was released early in many places across the US and as of this post i know several people who claim to have beaten the game. i feel it is a decent idea to believe them as they have spent nearly 72 hours locked in one of my friend's appartment going nuts.

having just purchased a new video card (radeon 9800pro 256). i played a littel and am both impressed and disturbed.  i was wondering if any other persons have played teh game as yet and what their impressons of it were.   as i have only played about 30 minutes so far  my impression is fairly limited.

i was hoping to get some screens in but i am being lazy and so ill get those in later.lua i have to go out:)

[pun] it scares the hell into me [\pun]

really tho, i think its the freakiest game i've ever played. i ACTUALLY have to put this one down sometimes and take a break. i've never got that scared before playing a video game. and visually, it's just amazing...

and the graphics made me think only one other thing... this would be a sweet engine for NS... i could just picture skulks coming out of the shadows and such... and most of the maps in doom 3 resemble ns maps anyway...

it's a very good game

Too bad we all know everybody ups their gamma in NS anyway, to the point where they can see even in the corners where no light penetrates to find their opponent.

Doom 3 certainly does look like a nice game, and from what I've heard, it plays well, although I can't help but notice there isn't anything pulling me towards it, there isn't some thing about the game that is compelling me to go and get a copy.

It's fun. It's fun because shotgunning zombies will always be fun. You couldn't screw that up if you tried. Hellspawn and hot lead are one of natures great pairings. Like salt and pepper or fish and chips. They were simply meant to go together. However... (you knew there was going to be a 'however', didn't you? Actually I bet you were expecting a 'but'. Well, there's no but here, buddy, so HAH!)

However, I have a problem with the way the game is set up. It is a pretty close copy of the old school doom games, but with ratcheted up eye candy. The problem I have with that is that it could be so much more. I thought serious sam sucked for this reason, it was nothing more than fragging the same old crap over and over and over ad infinitum. But still, this isn't too bad. Like I said, Ordinance + the undead = family fun. The main problem I have is that the game strives to create an atmosphere of tension and dread, which it does, but it does it too much.

How 'too much'? I hear you ask. (you should really stop talking to your computer, your mother is getting worried) Well, the classic (because it freaking works) method of properly building tension is to give someone a tense moment, then a relaxed moment, then a tense moment, then a relaxed moment, and keep them going one after the other, faster and faster and faster until you reach the dramatic pinnacle. Doom 3, on the other hand, gives you one relaxed moment. The moment you start the game. From the instant you're sent on your first mission to go find the missing scientist (about two minutes in for those that haven't played yet, no spoilers here) the tension starts up. And it DOESN'T. LET. UP. That's a bad thing. Not because it reduces me into a quivering pile of terrified goo, quite the opposite. Because too much tension building without release and the mind simply goes 'nah, I don't buy it,' and shuts down on you. Now no longer are you frightened when something jumps out, you just say 'wah, another imp, bang bang, next?' The great effort that's gone into making all these tense moments is wasted, because you simply can't remain tense for that long. The fear is replaced by disbelief. The shock when something pops out of the ceiling is wasted, because crap has been popping out of somewhere for the last eight rooms and six hallways and honestly, your brain just doesn't like that much SHOCK and SURPRISE and FEAR!!!

No pacing, is what I'm saying. RE had its safe rooms where you saved the game and relaxed for a bit and knew that you wouldn't have to worry about beasts jumping out at you. Then when you went back to the dangerous outside world, you were mentally refreshed and ready to be scared up even more. Doom doesn't have anything like this, and I think the lack of it really harms the game.

And that's my rant on doom3.

But, to reiterate, it's not that I don't like this game. I just feel it fails in a few areas that it could have really shined in. But still: firepower + minions of satan = fun.

agh... when will it end !? as much as im loving blasting through all the demons and zombies im gettin a bit annoyed at the "get everything back online" stuff which just sends you on the same trip almost every time :(

i hope im at the end >_<, as much as i want it to end i cant stop playing it cuz its so sekseh and gory.  >:D

I agree Bob, but I think there are sparse places where you can breath easy. Anywhere You don't have to use a flashlight to see the zombie that's COMING RIGHT FOR YOU!!!

However, I have noticed some of the over-used and overly-obvious triggers to cause a scare-the-hell-out-of-you moment. "Oh look, a new piece of armor, doo-da-doo-da-do... OH GOD SCREEN RED UNDEAD EVERYWHERE"

If you see armor laying next to a door, chances are you're going to have to pay for it.

Yeah, other games do that too - find a few health packs, you get them, and it spawns enemies... WHY THE :D WOULD YOU SPAWN ENEMIES WHEN I OBVIOUSLY NEED HEALTH?

Anyway, I'm probably almost at the end... but I cannot figure out how to kill The Guardian... :( I either run out of ammo or I die... there's like 3 medpacks in the room and I needed them almost right away.

Another thing - the physics engine is very refined. You don't see any glitches and odness you see in every other game that uses physics. Boxes seem to weigh and move like they should, enemies topple in realistic manners, the only single 'wierd' thing I saw, which was pretty cool nonetheless, was when I used a BFG on a Hell Knight and it seemingly picked him up and flung him across the room at supersonic speeds.

all good game an all but i cant see any dam textures, the walls are plain and people are just wearing blank clothes no hair no eye brows nothing. creapy looking eyes though.

apart from my obvious video problems its a darn good game, i remember one part where i found some scientist huging a computer after a breif chat turned around to head out the door and splat kill by the malfuctioning door :(

So far, its one of the greatest experiences ever.  However, I've only played the first few hours, so I'm sure it will eventually get to the point Bob had noticed (since he's always right).  Still, I can't stop ooooing and ahhhing at all the sexiness.

And Seth, thats quite horrible.

Heh, I've been having fun with my game crashing to the desktop every time I move ten feet. Hell, on top of that, the game repeatedly freezes in place and the lights turn off afterward.  <_<

Time to hunt for ye 'ol omega drivers for my card. If that doesn't work, ill just have to wait for a patch.... Damn, but it's fun when it's actually playing, runs beautifully until it hits one of the forementioned snags.

well it turns out it was driver problems, i installed some "DNA" drivers for my ati 9800 and whala running perfect on high setting.

apparently i'm not the only one that had this problem, found the cure at doomforums.com if anyone else needs it...

man what a creapy game, i find myself clinging to walls/shadows limping around with below 25hp most of the times, prolly should have dont "medium" difficulty before doing "extra insaneness" difficulty  o_O

Make sure you turn ALL the details down as far as they'll go. There's an 'advanced' setting in the video settings that I didn't notice at first. Even when you're running in 'low' mode it's still doing a lot of fancy bump mapping and shadowing and such. Once I turned all that off, it runs a lot better. And the game is so dark that it doesn't really matter if detail is low... it looks the same! (gg id for making a super high tech engine for displaying NICE GRAPHICS and then making the game too dark to SEE ANYTHING)  :p

i just finished it on vet setting, going to try nightmare next  >:D

if its getting repetitive that means u are proly cheating, i found it very unpredictible as to what spawn of satan i would be facing around the next corner and i was always suprised... also the selection of weapons seems to be up to the task of handing just about every situation.

those like spider drone's are sweet, i loved bumping into them cause i just knew things were going to get hairy around the corner...

i'd say the only part i found annoying is the transportation thingy with the 4 pads but there is really like 8 or 10  <_<
i ending up circling that stupid place so meny times uhh what a piss off... 45mins later i was on my way.  :(

soul cube is to die for, i love it, its a life saver/live taker!

um, how's the multiplayer?  the campaign was great, in my opinion.  I think going through first time as veteran helps. It might be because you can't just take every type of monster in the game with a shotgun, atleast in lategame, so not knowing what monsters are next can be difficult.  i'll have to try it on lesser diff.

But, they seem to somehow think that dialup is eeevil.  I'm un-allowed to join any multi-player games.  So, how is it, for those of you that both have Doom 3 and broadband?

OK, hell is just getting annoying. Is this how the final punishment will be for evil sinners? Being knocked off bridges into lava by stupid looking floaty heads that don't freaking die when you shoot them (even though your aim is dead on) and then having to quickrestore and try again FOR ETERNITY?

Repent now, ye evildoers.

pwnd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Question, Was it doom 1 or 2 that you couldnt "offciially" beat. The last boss was that giant head that shot demons at you, and you couldnt kill it but needed no clip cheat to go through the wall into that room with the small head on the stick and then killed it? I remember doing that awhile ago when playing at my cousins when we were around 8-9ish. Funny stuff.

Actually you could do it without cheating. There was a tiny slot way at the top that you had to shoot your rockets into. The trick was that if you noclipped through that wall, behind it you'd see the secret, real 'boss', the head on a stick. (And to whom did that head belong, children?)

i found something rather funny

in the first couple missions up to the part where you find the wounded soldier laying next to Lab A or whatever theres a overhead walkway (previously some dude threw a barrel at you from up there) if you use no clip and get onto the walk way go through the door down the ladder and you'll find that guy with the BFG 9000. I think hes name is Joe, if you try and talk to him he just gives you a strange look, blow him away and steal his BFG then leave...
interestinly he doeesnt show up in the later videos... quite funny BFG in the first lvl's

Yes, extract them to /base and move or delete the original .pk4s.  If you want to play the game online, you'll need to put the .pk4s back.  This supposedly helps loading times and such.

BACKUP FIRST (create a copy of your base folder with a different name and ONLY the .pk4 files  EDIT:BTW, your backup folder can run as a mod, so you don't have to reinstall or remame anything to play muti player in the future)

And don't unzip game000.pk4 or whatever it's called, only the pack000-pack004 .pk4 files.

Word from one of the id people on some message board somewhere that I'm too lazy to look up again is that extracting out the pk4 files wouldn't help with load times at all. Most of the load time is taken up cramming the level into your computer's ram. Extracting the stuff is pretty speedy.

I can speak from experiance, I dropped about a second and a half off of every load since I extracted the data.  It might not have fixed the loading, but it does help, expecially if you have slow ram...

Doom 3 needs at least a 9600?

i can't afford that >_<

No, it doesn't. One guy I know is running it with a 9200. And I've heard of people being able to run it effectively with a 9100. That is something, I must say. Of course, more RAM would help in these situations.
