Title: Retirement
Post by: Iconoclast on June 15, 2004, 04:39:19 PM
I came to a realization that NS and all online gaming related activities are very harmful to ones mental and physical health (not to mention the bad habbits and blockages it builds).

Therefore I no longer support any online gaming related actitivies.

I have deleted all the game files related to steam and uninstalled all games from my computer to avoid the slavery i was once bonded to.

I am truely sorry for all the harm that I have caused you and your family through my knowing and encouraging you to continue to play.

As for those that continue playing I hope they will attempt to quit online gaming as well and I pray that Half-Life 2 will never be released.  <_<

Good bye and take care. I should always remember your kindness.

*Looks at his computer*

Me: "I control you, got that? Not the other way around... See? Watch me get up and leave, yea that's right... Leave THIS ROOM."

*Slowly walks out of the room...*

Computer: "Riiiiiight... Let's just see about that..."

*A minutes passes*

Computer: "Oh Mi-ke! Remember those episodes of Samurai Champloo you spent all night downloading? BWAHAHAH! DELETE DELETE DELETE!!!"

*A scream rises from the back of the house*

Me: "NoooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! NOT THE ANIME! YOU BASTARD! YOU ROTTEN BASTARD!!!"

Computer: "There there, I did no such thing... Why don't you... Sit down and watch? And maybe when you're done, you can play some Natural-Selection and neglect your studies, like all young men do."

Me: "Hey now... That sounds good, maybe I will sit down... But just for a little while."

Computer: "I own you, do you know that?"

Me: "Did you say something?"

Computer: "Nope, not a thing  >:D  >:D  >:D "

 :help:

See you soon, Icon  >:D

Any behavior can be harmful if one becomes obsessed with or addicted to it.  However, the "gaming is evil" standpoint you seem to be adopting is no better.

Yea, every now and then someone feels the need to be given the grand farewell as they ride into the sunset. I hate those posts, it's so demoralizing. It makes me think that everyone is leaving, that the mod is dying. I know thats not the case, (maybe, I don't really know) but regardless, it just makes me feel bad for some reason.

People crave attention, even the people that don't post much/nobody notices much, and they think they'll get the attention they want when they say "Oh noes, I'm quitting (instert game here)". Although usually it ends up being "Uh... Bye... Whoever you are..." thing.

Give the guy a break, let's not throw a big fuss about this. Ok, he decided that games are really bad for him, his decision. We don't agree, our decision.

Icon: If you want to argue your point, you're more than welcome. I, too, disagree with you. Gaming is a hobby like so many others. And I don't see how it's worse for you than, say, reading. Reading doesn't get you any exercise either. Watching TV, though not classified as a hobby by most, is equally unhealthy. At least there's social interaction of a certain extent involved in gaming (just look at LM for a prime example), and gaming also has a lot on TV in terms of interactivity. Sure, gaming ain't sport, but it's got that in common with a lot of hobbies. Why is gaming in particular so bad for you?

Edit:

eh it does have bad things, n stuff, like me sitting here 20 hours straight playing City of Heroes throughout the night and drinking mountain dew, one after another. But meh, everyone has their hobbies :D. To be honest, since my life has been such crap i should say in the REAL life, and the fact that it would take awhile to even begin getting better, IF , I SAY IF, it would even if i did like....... work out, lose weight, have my hair cut to a better more "girl likeable haircut", etc. etc. etc. but you know what, screw that ^^, im having a good time playing video games, and exercise isnt my thing, especially since when i run alot i start to taste blood (is that bad? lol, no blood is ever apparent in my spit, but i just swear i taste it). but meh ill stick to my computer and the life i have on that, since i have good friends here, and on CoH, and that eh, screw women, they have just been trouble to me so far. Atleast im not like a germ freak, or a perfectionist. Though i do have a better IQ then usual, im just unmotivated....... like alot of smart people, who just dont give a ^^ about such a inevicent world and ...... ill just stop here lol

I guess total abandon of gaming was impossible. I'll be coming back to play, but not as much.

My apologies to Grimm if I sound like I'm just seeking attention. I am going through alot of personal struggles and I just had a breakdown, gaming was an easy target.

Some people have trouble choosing their priorities.  I'm one of them.  Boy, if I could put away gaming for just a week I could get so much accomplished!  Hey bob, guess when was the last time I worked on that map conversion...2 weeks ago!  Yeah, I suck.

It all comes down to personally habit, just try to limit yourself to only a bit of gaming a day.  Easier said than done, I know.  If you have trouble putting down the keyboard I would seek some kind of consultant.  Good to know you're not gone for good though! <3  <3  <3

Iconoclast, I just wanted to wish you luck in your endeavors, and I hope you find the time to balance your priorities. I know gaming can really take president if you're not careful. I'm glad you're willing to sacrifice it in order to lead a more normal, healthy, balanced life.

Oh yeah, and GG today on Nancy, your fade took out our whole base almost singlehandedly  ;)

I managed to do this for sereral months, and learned a very important lesson.  It simply cannot be done unless you replace gaming with some other time-consuming hobby.  We, as gamers, learn to depend on this for many things, including stress reduction and relaxation.  If you find no other way to gain these benefits, you will inevitably come back, no matter how stubborn, tough, or detemined you are.  From my observations, one of the best substitutes is a girlfriend.  However, I find that moderate gaming is not a problem, and there is no reason to stop altogether.

Welcome to the boards, Asal!  'Bout time you showed up.

I find gaming to be best when you don't have time to do crazy binges on it.  Balance it with other hobbies and it brings more satisfaction... i.e. I'm not on the server that much between a full-time job, a girlfriend, and a band, so every hour of gaming I get is sweet sweet nectar.  You have to WANT to do something else though, or it will never happen.  Also your room will never get cleaned.

...even without games, my room never got cleaned.  For that matter, I always seemed to have dirty laundry lying around.  What's up with that?  You mean I have to do work? How annoying.  :(

As for showing up, I decided it was about time to go out and find these things, after seeing them mentioned one too many times.  It bugged me.  I want to see all the craziness the place cooks up, not just the little portion I have a hand in on the server itself.
