Do you think NS should be played according to the stories, videos, and pictures (in other words, Atmospheric),
Or for clan play. Examples by this: Marines jumping around like bunnies on crack whenever they freakin see a alien, using scripts, Finding ways to gain a advantage against someone of your equal skill.
Give me a post stating if you think NS should be played "Atmospherically" or Played as a "regular Team Deathmatch game"
I think it should be played atmoshperically. And not not the way its being played nowdays, In other words more "realistic" as if you yourself saw a alien running at you. and Quite frankly I really do think there's plenty of TDM games out there, why not go play them instead?) <_<

Just bug someone have them make it an actual vote

as requested

i put atmoshperic :D , have you ever played a 1v1 co game when 1 player was a cloaked skulk and you a la marine with no ups ? lol , thats fun stuff right there, spooky ambiance, you never know when its gonna hit you ... ns on source would get the atmospheric job done way more too, moss on the floors, lights flickering down dark dreary hallways, .. yeah im done rambling now ^_^
-
Voted for atmospheric, as that would be my ideal.
However... (who didn't see this coming)
I play it totally the opposite way. Yes, my gamma is turned up high enough that only the darkest of corners can hide skulks. I tried for so long to play with normal gamma settings, but I got tired of being that skulk, thinking I'm hiding in the dark, and getting shot by a marine with lightgamma 1 set.
Yes, I know how to bunnyhop, I had to learn it since I got tired of never being able to make it down those long hallways to get so much as a bite in on a camping enemy.
YES, I jump around like my TSA issue boots are on fire whenever a skulk charges at me. I can't help it, it makes me live longer.
And the fact is that it is a competitive game. Marines vs. Aliens, a battle for domination. As much as I would really like to play an atmospheric, scary, exciting game, as long as the opposing team is comprised of people who are going to win at all costs, I've got to do similarly, or the game won't be any fun for me. Dying all the time isn't fun, regardless of how nice the map looks when you turn your gamma down and really enjoy the overbrightening effect. (go open up ns_bast and type lightgamma 5 in your console if you don't believe me, the effect is AMAZING)
So yeah, atmospheric gets my vote, but that would mean that the game would have to have hard coded limits to enforce it. There's no way to keep people from cranking their gamma. If marine jumping were toned way down, maybe the crack jumping problem would be fixed. If bhopping was coded out (easy to do, but hasn't been done) and aliens simply given a max movement speed, that would go away. Blink could be reworked into something else that's easier in the hands of a newer fade. But with Flayra's love of competitive play, this doesn't seem likely to happen any time soon.
MAYBE with NS2 we'll see something like this happen, we can only hope. But people are always going to aim to kill as many enemies as possible and survive for themselves in any way possible. That's the nature of competition, and this game isn't called 'marines and aliens make friends and have a tea party'. :p

I was originally attracted to Natural Selection because of the atmosphere and the backstory behind it all. There weren't any other mods like it out there, it had long spooky corridors and vents that suddenly spray steam to make you crap your pants and such. When I first started playing, I was actually scared of going out into a hallway for actual fear of being attacked by the aliens. I also used to get a thrill out of hearing the ching ching ching of marines running by, then catching up behind them to take them out before they knew what hit them. The atmosphere was everything for me, and it was absolutely amazing because there was nothing like it out there. Any time I go back the Natural Selection main page, nowadays its for that background song, because it was that song and that booping sound that caught my attention and made me go "Woah". Whenever I hear it now, I get somewhat nostalgic, but the feeling is gone, sucked to a dry husk of anything fun or amaznig that used to be there.
I still like the idea of atmosphere and such. I sometimes browse through fanfics, and recently have been writing one of my own, because I like to imagine being in these situations. The world of Natural Selection is perfect for all kinds of ambience. Maybe someday if I actually learn to map and model and all sorts of other things, I might decide to work on this little idea I have for a single player campaign with soo much backstory and ambience and all that cool stuff, and it would all be soo awesome with the Halflife 2 engine and graphics. But at the moment, its just a fancy little idea I have, and to be honest I doubt it will ever become a reality.

Atmospheric...
If at all possible, I would love to see the game built forcibly around atmosphere, but I don't see that happening. I have my gamma about recommended, which is rather low compared to the rest of the NS community I imagine. My aim is less than commendable, and I still haven’t learned how to bunnyhop (correctly), yet anything else I can reasonably do to get some sort of edge I’ll take.
It seems to me that atmosphere was coded in mind from the start, but was then ignored at the (unfortunate) urgings of the more ‘leet’ community members. For example, marines’ backpedaling speed is deathly slow. The reasoning being you either turn and fight or get the hell away. That feature has been there since I can remember. Some of the more recent atmosphere mangling features have been ignore though, such as bunnyhopping in all its forms.
Atmosphere is essentially a grandiose goal, and in a game where competition is the main objective, any and all advantages will be taken in the midst of battle.

+1 atmospheric
it's what brought me to 1.04 ... someone needs to get 1.04 on steam
-
Vote atmospheric since that's what i <3 bout' NS, makes is diffrent from all the other mods.

It was better when marines weren't owning every skulk they came across. I remember even in 2.01, if you're out ramboing on your own and you hear that click-click-click-click of a skulk nearby, you froze up and got into cover. Because most likely if that skulk sees you, you're dead. Now they're so easy to kill that I just stand in the middle of the room and wait for them to pop out. I mean, what, 9 bullets? From a gun that shoots something like 15 bullets in a second? And the big bullet spread only makes it easier, you don't even have to aim that well. So yeah, beefing skulk armor would make the game more interesting and atmospheric. Heck, even lone gorges had a chance against marines in 2.01. Now it's just OOH FREE KNIFE KILL!
I guess I'm saying the game would have more of a hold on your fear if there was SOMETHING to fear. Papier-mache aliens just don't don't do it for me.

i would love for ns to more atmosphereic even though like bob i use high gamma in order to see in the dark corners for the sneaky skulks that wait to ambush me.
another reason i would like to see ns more atmosphereic is that now i can appreciate it more since i have a great new video card

MOVED to the NS forum.

Yes, atmospheric, or competitive, the thing is, as much as we all want one, there's probably no way to get atmos, with all the people in the ns community, everyone wants nice maps, just as everyone wants to be the winner. In my opinion I think the ns community has been blessed with fabulouse maps of creative genious and crazy details in everything (texturing, lighting) I was amazed by the maps at first, that took me a couple of weeks to get over, and yet with people still maping I find myself getting amazed again with the detail that is put into ns maps, which you wont find in much other mods. And mix it with the competitiveness of ns as it is now, and it makes it a pretty awsome game to play, the competitive part is sometimes annoying yes, but you must admit that it's a big part of the game now, and a big part of the community (I never changed my gamma thoguh, just turned off the lights.... and Im never too sure if im actually bhopping or not :) )
So I say if you took out a part of the competitievness, you'd be taking out a part of the ns community, and god knows what else that would do to it.
Sorry for all the typing errors, im sure theres plenty.
again just a thought

Im 100% for atmosheric. This makes the game good, take it away and your left with nothing but CS set in the futur

Atmospheric.... I loved Games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill beacause they made ya Jump and almost crap your pants At every turn. I played the first RE and was scared ^^less when a zombie dog comes through a window when its been quiet for 5 mins of hallwal walkin and spooky Music.... NS is kind of like that Well it used to be.. (I played the very first Version When it came out) and i loved it but now all u gutta do is stay in a long Hallway as rine and get your 20 kills before someone tells ya to leave or they get a fade or onos ;)

couldn't have said it better

in my opinion, what makes a game good enough to play is a perfect balance between the two.

I would go for atmospheric, and my main gripe with NS since 2.01 has been the downright weird changes... most of which drained at the atmosphere, but I admit some of them were needed to allow for competitive play.
Bilebomb was a huge shock for me when they changed it... It went from a decent/good fade skill that damaged everything, to a skill on a gorge that looks gross and is almost completely harmless.
If you go back and read the 1.0 manual and the backstory for bile... it was a huge diversion from its original purpose.
-
I voted for atmospheric... though I don't really like the way you phrased the question. If competitive was changed to mean "balanced" instead of "OMG CLAN" then I would definitely vote competitive. Games that have a high fun factor and a high balance factor are the ones you see people playing again and again, and this is the reason I stick with NS (that and the LM community :D)
-
Atmospheric is more important than gameplay, however both are important.
A general rule for me is that games should be atmostpheric, but not to the point where it takes away the fun of the game.
If it were fully atmospheric, the ships would probably be more or less pitch dark, and marines would have to have flashlights on all the time in hopes to spot the skulk before it gets to them. Its damn cool, but its not very fun for the marines, now is it?
-
I actually am going to say gameplay. I play multiplayer games for the action and reward of defeating a thinking opponant.
If I want atmosphere I'll play something singleplayer.

There ya go, you summed up what I was trying to say much better. ^_^

I agree with you on the playing multiplayer games for defeating a thinking opponent, but I disagree on the atmosphere for singleplayer. Mainly because the only FPS game I can think of that has atmosphere for single player is AVP and AVP2.... Those games suck to be marines, too scary. The alien is just.... well the marines are too stupid for it to be fun enough to play multiple times. The predators are just... well its more of "LOL HOW DO I JUMP???" then of very good atmosphere, its also sniping out those marines who just stand in clumps randomly.
I voted atmosphere because I liked the notion of sneaking around as a skulk to chomp those marines, like back in 1.x you could even get the best of players if you snuck up on them on the right map.... unless there was two. Hence why 1.x was scrapped! In 2.x that was just fun stuff, skulks were literally on crack, and the hitboxes were finally fixed so then it was harder for guys to hit you o/, whole different atmosphere but still fun stuff. Now I don't know what the atmosphere is, it doesn't feel all that competitive either..
I do agree that there needs to be a balance, but I just want it to be slightly more atmospheric because not many other games do this. AVP and AVP2 multiplayer isn't atmospheric at all... except maybe for facehuggers on.... barely..
-
AVP has facehugger for multiplayer? H4x! i have never seen 1 before in multi!
Anyhow im still all for atmospheric, NS is going "less atmospheric" every build which is totally bringing NS down the drain to being a typical HL DM game except with a cool resource system. The storyline is thrown off, the manual is tottaly outdated because almost every damn thing on marine was buffed up. And its going WAY off track of what NS was "supposed" to be. Balanced and heavily atmoshperic. I mean take a look at the intro video, if anything it looks scary. But now, in 3.0 they make paper thin skulks and alien "tanks" that die in less than 5 seconds of showing itself to a few marines with a HMG. The game went from "oh crap, they got a fade / Onos, guys stick together. to: "Teamwork?, who need teamwork? i got my HMG/jp and medspam. I can clear this ship / complex all by myself.
Thats 1 reason why I hate when MODS get big. Devs are too "busy" to listen to good suggestions and only listen to the email spammers / their friends at home (in NS's case im betting most were CS/DOD junkies v_v )
Im going to end my final statement on this topic now.
Ns basically sucks via 3.0 builds. If it wasn't for LM I would have definetly quit and never looked back at this damn game ever again. It's going downhill and we all know that, there's possibly little hope that this soon will turn into a "clan" competative game. NS 2 (if there is ever going to be one) is going to be horrible as well after a few builds. (in other words, when the HL DM nubs get their hands on flayra email address.)
I really can't wait for B5 to come out, so i can have an excuse to post how much this game has sucked since 1.0- pre 2.0 in the NS.org forums.
Thats my overall sumed up take on this game, and when I find another game to replace this "sinking" one, i sure as hell will jump aboard that ship hoping it won't sink like the titanic in which is the direction of NS.
