Title: The Bind Of Pain
Post by: CForrester on March 24, 2004, 03:22:02 PM
The Bind of Pain was removed recently. I heard that it was due to abuse, but to be honest... I didn't see any abuse at all with it. It was used often yes, but I didn't hear many/any complaints about its usage.

I think the BoP is a great idea, as it prevents people camping in the readyroom for entire rounds and when it is used, where you are assigned is truly random. The Random Team portal isn't truly random, because you can usually predict what team you will join just by glancing at the scoreboard.

I've spoken to quite a few people in the server, and I've seen a lot of support for putting the Bind of Pain back in and very little support for leaving it out. I believe the usefulness of the BoP far outweighs any abuse that may have taken place.

What exactly is the bind of pain?

BoP is crap, one reason i've found is that it pulls spec's out and forces them on to a team, and the result is a afk marine or alien. very annoying!

it basically was admin_random which made everyone join a random team

it helped out a lot with the people who like to have irc conversations in the ready room, but it is now gone though i'ld like to it come back since it was a great tool to get people to actually play and not tie up slots in the rr.

in conclusion bring it back so the games will be more interesting by not having 5 or more people sitting in the ready room during peak playing times

Basically, it executes "autoassign" on everybody's client, which forces people who aren't already on a team to join a random team.

If you're only AFK for a minute or two, it doesn't really matter much. If you're AFK for 5 minutes, you'll be booted anyway.

Why are you going spec to evade the autokicker? Thats even more annoying then idling in the RR
You have a reserved slot, so you don't have to worry about loosing it

well, for the afks who join teams because of the BoP.
two words:
AFK kicker

Bring Back BoP!(I think thats the campaign slogan)
Anyway, the BoP makes for some nice games.  Instead of all good players join 1 team and own, you get a mix, making for very good games.  And its useful for people sitting around in the RR.
What kind of "abuse" did you get with it anyway?

Too often, a new map would load and all of a sudden I'm shoved on Marines when I had just been Marines for two rounds, or vice versa. I like to get a little variety sometimes, and the Bind didn't help out much as most often I was shoved on the same team for a couple rounds in a row when I was Binded each time at the very very beginning of the game.

So you're Alien or 'rine 2-3 times in a row, or one AFK needs to be kicked manually. Those are very minor problems compared to 80% of all current LM games having ~2v2 starts.

Bring back BoP, and lets play NS for a change :p

I'd rather have small game starts than the same monotony for a third or fourth time. And also take into consideration that there isn't always an admin on, so there isn't always someone to initiate the bind.

NS has readyrooms for a reason. If you were meant to be thrown onto a team without any choice, or chance to get a snack, hit the toilet, anything, there wouldn't be readyrooms, would there.

that is all well and good and everything but having conferences in the readyroom is just plain stupid and 80% of the time that is what is going on when no one joins a team <_<  v_v

feh, this post should be a vote! :> I'm FOR the bind of paen, it was fun and made sure slackers didn't waste server space while people who actually wanted to play were frustrated...

I'm kinda new but i like autoassign, best way to get unique teams that aren't 8 'Aimbotters' vs 8 NSPlayers. Afk's will be taken care of anyways although marines getting telefragged all the time and holding up IP spawn queue might be annoying. o_O

BoP was usefull when youd have most of the reg's joining up... and the pubbers irc'ing...

frankly, If they want to chat, theyre gonna chat, They COULD do it in IRC, or somewhere else, but they do it in the RR...

this would be a problem except for that ive never seen the infamous bull-shooting sessions occur on a full server, and its usually AT 3 AM!!! lol

bop is nice, but really, It's LB's server... i doubt he'll concede cause a bunch of people who cant even use the command want it back...

almost all of the time when i Bind of Pained it (formerly known as the BIND OF DOOOM), i'd wait for ppl to pick the teams they wanted. so hopefully you get to go aliens for once, if you so desired.

IIRC, LB says no to the BOP coming back. but my memory is foggy, i can't even remember what i had for dinner yesterday. :S

No.[/size]

Official Statement: Camping the readyroom or speccing to protest the removal of admin_forceteams OR to evade the AFK kicker will result in a perm ban!

Thanks.
