Off Topic / hl2/hl1 problem
« on: December 27, 2004, 06:03:06 PM »
hl2 this happens 100% with in single player only, haven't tried any of the other things for it, cept dm once, which it was fine in. hl1 this happens rarely, but restarting hl.exe fixes it;

my sound will play stupidly fast, like its on fast forward, idk why though :( i have latest sound drivers, tried it with winamp closed and it still happens. restarting hl.exe won't fix hl2 though, and its very hard to understand what the npcs are saying =( my frame rate is fine, it plays flawlessly, using 800x600 so idk :(

help pls!

edit;
indeed soundcard info is good.

Creative SB Live! Series, no old cards to test against =/ its a dell version if that matters at all.

*please read this all before making any form of comment, and if i did any calcs wrong please say so in a friendly manner, but according to balance.txt and the damage sim, they are indeed correct, thanks in advanced*

I've got a very vanilla opinion here but I think the SG is just fine.  sure it's powerful in the right hands, but if it were overpowered, then a comm dropping his team 8 shotguns would be GG.

I'm not much of a 'twitch' alien.  my bhopping sucks and I've never been that excellent at knowing what angles to run at a marine w/o getting mown down.  the games I actually come out of with a good score are the games I use stealth, which is the biggest counter to SGs imo.  running headlong at a sg marine and getting blasted in the face is not frustrating, it's stupid.  falling on his head or decloaking next to him or setting up an ambush = smart.  the end.

as for the hive killing ability - sg rushing a hive is a beautiful thing, and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. :p the fun of being part of a rush definitely beats the annoyance of being an alien and watching the hive disappear in 5 seconds, IMO.

what? you just contradicted yourself there. if its overpowered..8=gg.. then you say 5 second hive rushes are perfectly fine? yet thats 80 res for a <5 second instant win. not to mention it can kill EVERY SINGLE LIFEFORM EXCEPT ONOS IN ONE CLIP, CARA OR NOT, AT ANY WEAPON LEVEL(against 1 hive, but seriously, how hard is it to have sgs against 1 hive aliens with them dropping hives in a stupidly overpowered amount of time?)

in all honesty, you can't call shotguns balanced. you can say you like it as is sure, but it is impossible to argue it is balanced in any way shape or form. i already see the: BUT HOLY, IF A FADE CANT KILL A MARINE IN 5.2 SECONDS THE FADE SHOULD DIE ANYWAY! but bob, if theres >1 shotgunner, the time gets multiplied significantly. level 0 shotgun, 4 shots. 4 marines, 4 sgs, dead fade. 40 > 50 res, instant death. or lerks! they barely live through a good sg shot(with cara, instant death at l1 weapons, especially with a pistol hit) skulks never ever live through a sg shot unless some bad luck happens, due to the lesser hitboxes/various issues with their hitboxes.

as well, sgs are close range. every alien is basically a melee unit, you can't realistically expect any of them to fight off a marine at range(gorges spit.. but i doubt a gorge is going to solo a sg rush anytime ever) as well, as i've stated various times, a shotgun clip soloes mostly every lifeform except onos at hive1.  as well, marines get ranged weaponry to top this all off, so they can hit close with a shotgun then the hmg/lmg can finish off the lifeform as it attempts to escape.

my main concern is not that this happens every single game, i'm not saying it will. i'm saying that it is POSSIBLE. as you may have guessed by now, i really hate shotguns. hive drops in the following # of pellets, in order of upgrade(0-3); 412,375,344,317. thats 41 hits, 37 hits, 34 hits, 32 hits. random extra pellets not really mattering, its a hive, if you miss it...yea. so lets do some math rq. 41 hits.. 8 shots per marine.. 8 16 24 32 40. 5 marines, hive has no health left, pistol, knife, tk, anything, its dead. that takes about.. 11.7 seconds. at level 0 weapons. so 50 res, 12 second dead hive. thats usually not enough time for aliens to arrive and change the situation at all =/ marines get beacon and phasegates, and the ability to relocate on the fly. aliens get.. 3 preset hive locations. so basically they really lack the kind of counter for a shotgun rush that is needed, unless they spend a stupid amount of res on OCs, which may give some reaction time, sure. but as upgrades increase: about same time for level 1, but does go down quicker with a team of 5, level 2 gives it 34 hits basically, so 40 res of shotguns and a lmg+pistol can take it down in 12 seconds. level 3.. 32 hits, 4 sgs indefintly take it down in 11 seconds.

now i'm sure someone will also come up with the arguement that you need to add upgrade costs to the cost of the rush, and phasegates, etc. well if you think for a moment, if you DIDN'T get those things, could you win WITHOUT shotguns? no. those are basically required, they just amplify the overpowered-ness that shotguns have. 30 res bacon+pg, say 50 res for shotguns, dead hive before aliens can react, and in other servers where structure distractions are okay, throw another 20 in to distract ocs with a CC, 0 reaction time <12 second dead hive.

okay summary is this: shotguns are blatantly overpowered with all of the things marines get. we've all seen it, we know how it goes. the only fix is that sg's get removed totally, there are no other realistic fixes. maybe nerf the damage per pellet, which would also be another option, but i'd prefer something to add a new flavor rather than just nerfing sgs into the ground, something maybe SOLELY anti structure(does crap vs lifeforms by itself) so marines get their "early game structure counter". i don't know, i'm not the best at thinking up ideas for things like that. all i know is sg's are completly overpowered, end of story.

a note: hive2 barely, barely improves any lifeforms aside fade, which gets an average of 4-7 extra pellet hits, one more shot basically. ns is balanced for 6v6, so 5 marines hitting a fade at the same time with a sg shouldn't be impossible, especially since the next patch requires "more marine teamwork"(they should be more likely to be together)

secondary note: presumably, hive3 being up and active usually spells doom for aliens, but if marines have the res for a jetpack shotgun rush, you can kiss all the hives goodbye in about 2 minutes tops, with 0 ocs. most likely there would be, but again, for most situations where you can structure distract, they will not matter enough.

edit, as a 3rd note(lol); you have to also realize this, killing aliens IS NOT THE GOAL OF THE MARINES. IT IS KILLING THE HIVES. the aliens DO NOT HAVE TO BE DEAD TO KILL THE HIVE. most people don't seem to get that.

/me hugs HD :D

Another point I like to bring into this is comparing it to the alien equivlent of a shotgun rush. What structure has above-all importance to marines? The CC. If marines have no CC it is probably a 0.03% chance of winning, and only then if they are fully teched up and suited out about to kill one of two hives.

So how can you kill the CC in under 12 seconds? Five onos. That is 375 res for just the lifeform, just as the 50-80 res for shotguns counts the weapon only, not other tech. On top of this, good luck getting 5 onos to marine start and through the obsticle course of structures to the CC unnoticed.

probably faster with a bunch of onos, with adren, and cara, and hive3, all charing the cc while goring it, with no marines knifing them(current patch) to move them, and they survive till it dies, and teh commander doesn't have the res for a new cc.

as for upgrades, a direct arguement i had against it is this: if they affected JUST THE SHOTGUN then you could throw the upgrade arguement around, but they don't, so no.

edit:

wanted to comment on legion's statement,

i have wanted damage types ever since i thought about that, so yea i like the idea. setting damage vs armor types for EVERY SINGLE WEAPON would make it SO MUCH EASIER to balance. but i've always wondered if its possible in HL

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the HMG kill any lifeform in one clip as well?

yes, but it can't drop a hive like shotguns can, and it requires 3 minutes of tech in a specific location, can't just drop an armory anywhere then drop hmgs. as well, kill the advanced armory, no more hmgs. shotguns are a beginning tech, however, so thats not a realistic argument. it would take 6 level 0 hmgs to drop a hive with a full clip, thats a lot longer than it takes level 0 shotguns, and only 5 shotguns(and some pistol to finish it, but still, faster than hmgs) to do it.

edit;

sure, sensory, especially in b6, helps a ton to counter this. but its not really fair when they are trying to open the chamber order to more possiblities to basically require aliens to get sensory first. if they don't, its basically pretty easy for a marine to sneak a pg up and beacon then dead hive.

should be sufficient enough, with the quotes :o

Off Topic / Router With Hl Problem
« on: November 01, 2004, 01:56:00 PM »
:help:
my netgear router keeps dropping my entire listen server(haven't tried dedicated, assuming it will be the same outcome) at seemingly random points, i believe by changing the port my hl client is sending out. if i do 'status' it says 27015, but its never my ip:27015 to find it, i think thats sven though :p

when it drops everyone, they all time out and i'm left unlagged etc, i've turned off my xp firewall and opened the 27015 port, not sure what to do at this point :( its not my isp or anything either, been through two isps with this problem. any help appreciated, i've looked at netgears site some but theres never anything useful there

thanks in advanced  <3

Off Topic / Ding Dong Ditch
« on: October 25, 2004, 07:38:36 PM »
excuse horrible spelling/grammar:

i live in your average neighborhood, but people do this as expected around halloween. 6 days before halloween, we had someone ring the doorbell, then ring it again(a bit after) then open our screen door, without knocking. was opened again(or autoclosed, not sure.) my mom wouldn't let me check the door etc nor did i really want to at the time, still kinda creeped out. called the cops, it was all clear. dog was freaking out, hair up and all, so someone was definatly there.

so my question is; any advice for this situation? i can stare out another window with some sneakyness and try to see what is up, but i can't see the door without being at it physically, which makes it hard when you don't know whats on the other side(could be a robber, or some kid(s) ) so basically its look out the window and hope they are stupid, or try to look through the peephole or a window around the door.

if anything, give me a way to calm my mom and sister down. i lack a father figure in the household so its really up to me, and i need help on what to say and how to react =/ any help is appreciated, any +1s to this and i will instantly bitch out ura to nazi your postcount.

Off Topic / Knife List Removal Quest
« on: September 13, 2004, 02:34:47 PM »
came up with this random idea on irc, so figured i'll have some fun with this :) so if you want removal of your current marine or alien kills by me(see bottom) then  attempt the quest. ns kills only count, preferably on LM

and now, ze quest

basics: no same people(ever, for all parts combined) tk's don't count either :p if i find out someone is attempting to cheat in any way, it removes you from any hope of this.

screenshot of the knife kill or the console counts, preferably while holding scoreboard up if possible.

1. you must knife people for every letter in the alphabet, one for each letter. can't use same name for multiple letters ever.

2. para kill an admin :D

so thats 27 kills you have to get. condumps will help your chances btw(not required but if you're first and something is fishy, i may not pick you, or just dont be fishy :D) preferably you try to do this on LM(theres enough people running through and i can name a few people to use for the 'odd' letters) keep your original names please, make this fun and competative :D

good luck, good game. and yes, i do count for anything. but only recent kills after 9/13/04.

ready? GO

edit: changed my mind about some stuff. first person gets complete removal, 2 and 3 get the choice of either alien or marine kills removed.

Off Topic / Opengl In Php
« on: June 09, 2004, 07:06:28 AM »
pretty neat, copying this from slashdot:

Submitted as an entry into the .geek PHP5 tournament a proof of concept openGL implementation in PHP has been released by Peter 'iridium' Waller. The demonstration (download) shows four items being rendered in realtime by PHP at a not unreasonable 59FPS. The author welcomes feedback with practical uses for this technology.

screenshot of it can be seen here

and the file itself can be gotten here

but this is for discussion, what do you guys think of this :? imo it may be neat to have full php games using opengl, just to see it happen.

Off Topic / Gorge's Guide To World Domination
« on: March 22, 2004, 10:31:51 PM »
foreword: i wrote this really late at night and its supposed to be a pure joke, so please treat it as one :), i stole the idea from a post about healers in another game, and thought this would be humorous, so i took a shot.

Chapter 1. Combat

A) How should I spend my 9 points?

Well, you obviously need to spend 1 on gorge, so 8 to go. 1 for bile bomb, and 1 for web, 6 to go, question those and just stop reading.  next you need adren and regen to be able to attempt to be useful, so 4 to go. now you can get celerity, if you want world domination you gotta be able to get places, after all.  next comes focus, damage = overtake your opponents.  3 points to go, you can get scent of fear if you aren't wallhacking, it helps to know where to web up before the marines get there.  2 points left, you get carapace because living longer only hurts your opponents. the last point is your choice, deem it on the situation. i'd suggest cloaking, for reasons to come.

B) What about classic NS?

you're going to want adrenaline, regen, and focus.  these allow you to recover from any stray bullets that may go your way (hey, people miss the onos sometimes.) and you can web up easily and spit.

Chapter 2: Levelling Up

So you finally hit level 2, and you're a gorge, or you just spent your 10 res and now are the pudgy one.

Betya think World Domination starts now, eh?

WRONG!

The next 4 or so levels will be really tough, but play it out. you are going to dominate the world, after all. if its classic ns, let the domination begin by dropping some dcs.

So you got your upgrades, and are happy, World Domination time?

WRONG!

World Domination won't start for a while, these things take time.

A) How do I get by?

basically you have to whore yourself out and try to steal kills or leach exp in exchange for some healspray. cloaking also helps, as you can leech better, but this is best for combat.

B) Should I drop ocs?

YES. more damage = more domination = more res = good.

Chaper 3: Knowing all

World domination requires you're a smart one, and can predict your opponents. SoF helps with this. knowing how to focus spit then healspray then spit again also comes in handy.  following an onos in combat or something equally destructive for exp is good as well, dropping well setup ocs in classic can be dominating. at first you will die, often. a lot. but you'll learn from these deaths, and eventually becoming all knowing.

Chapter 4: Tic Tacs (or tactics, for you dominationless people)

Heres where the domination really prevails. to dominate you must learn various skills: focus spit then spray, web while in combat, and dancing around your ocs.  keep your opponent webbed and he can't do anything against you but stare. also, remember to always S.K.I.P., suprise keeps it perfect. don't get caught off guard, or your dead meat. always have the upper hand, and you will dominate.

one opponent: web twice, spit, web, spit spray, web and so on till he dies. if its a HA, web it a few times and run like hell because you won't win alone unless he's hurt. jetpackers are your folly, as they think they have godmode but fall instantly to webs. if they have a grenade(launcher or hand) try to get them to waste the ammo then web them down and you win.

multiple opponents: world domination requires lots of work, you're going to have to web a lot here, and just healspray since it hits everyone in front of you. skill is what prevails here, and you'll need a lot of it.

Chapter 4: Cheating and Dirty Tricks

know how annoying web is? make sure you abuse it. a lot. always. put them on the floor where people won't see them and take control. setup trap areas, but change them every now and then.

a. you remember bile bomb? well you can web the marine guarding base and take down his armory. that'll get him really angry, loss of his amoury(spelling intended)

b. cloaking is like a free get away, remember to have a key bound to walk so you can avoid people while you regen, perhaps consider silence over celerity for this.

c. kill everything. level one, vanilla marine, friendly or not. they are worth something no matter what level you are. if you're level 10 in combat, kill them even more, just for the sheer domination, after all you're trying to dominate the world.

I know, World Domination sounds like a lot of work. IT IS, but if you find that a bit too daunting....perhaps you should try res whoring for onos?
