I should pick up the demo now... was putting it off at first because I figured the DL times would be pretty scary for the first little while, but they should have calmed down a little now.

I like Traveller's Rythem the most... most melodic-sounding to me :)
I think you should focus on a melody more, one that changes and evolves throughout the song. Right now, it's not the melody evolving, but what's supporting it - beat, background. In my opinion, it should be the other way around.

Also, I have a small question. Do you play around with notes until they sound nice, or do you get them playing in your head then you just put it in? Basically, do you write by trial -and-error or something that's already laid out in your head?

With fruity loops its primarily trial and error.  you write a bunch of little loops and then you make a song out of it.  There is a lot more room for flexability with reason, so I'm starting to move more towards evolving melodies, just haven't had the time to lay down a full track yet.

Most of you probably had no clue whatsoever, but a few of you might know that I've been into digital mixing for music for quite some time... now I kind of feel I need to apologize, you've probably seen me reeming people out for bad sample choices and use of crappy synths in the past yet have never seen me post any of my work to back my statements.  I didn't really want to get back into the "OLO FREE MP3 HOST FOR YOU!!!" thing ever since internetDJ went down the tubes and started making people pay for accounts, so I just never hosted the stuff, and thus none of you ever heard it.  Yesterday Legion offerend me some hosting to post my stuff, thanks a million man  <3  <3  <3.  Anyways, here is a small sampling, which pretty much consists of all my work that I considered good enough to share from the last 2 years (I'm a hobbist, this isn't my job and I'm not that hardcore).  Most of it is made with Fruityloops and one song made with Reason.  For future referance I wouldn't recommend Fruityloops to any aspiring mixers. FL is a VERY bare bones sound suite... when you run into something that doesn't sound right in a FL song you basicly say to yourself "how the hell am I going to fix this?" when you run into something in reason you say "which of these many many options am I going to use to fix this?".  Takes longer to learn, but overall reason is a MUCH nicer sound suite.  Downloads and listenings of awesome music free for all!

BeachSideCoffee:
Probably my oldest song in this series, nice mellow sound, some nice light synths and good sound effect samples in the background.  I hit a lucky note on this one, as it probably turned out better then most of the other stuff here in the end.  Made with Fruityloops.

Sonar Espionage:
Intersting sound, catchy tune, not very mainstream stuff...  Sounds to me like a video game mix or something, hear for yourself, it's a little hard to explain...  Made with Fruityloops.

TharBeDragons!:
A little more of a mystical sound, something that might be used in a FF style MMORPG or something, hence the "thar be"ing of "dragons".  Made with Fruityloops.

TravellersRythem:
I think I spelled something in the title wrong :P...  Either way, This is the last Fruityloops song I ever made, you can hear that it's a little cleaner and more professional sounding...  much more relyant on the groove of the melody then a strong beat to pull the listener into the song... I get bored of this song after a little while, but it would be decent background music for something.

Journy (VsB remix):
I came up with the original melody and beat for this song and then abandoned it because it originally sounded really really crappy.  My brother picked it up though and resampled everything and I'm really quite pleased with the result.  VsB stands for Voodoo steam Boat... he hasn't used that nickname in forever but I think it's still his DJ handle...  My brother is hardcore, and has pumped a fair few techno tracks out of fruity loops that I personally think leave some of the better professional artists in the dust.  I've learned a fair bit from going through his sources and seeing how he does stuff.  Made and remixed in fruityloops.

Shreads:
My most recent peice, and probably the most catchy of all these songs.  Some of the stuff I did with the synths going through a scream machine just gives this a really hard edge that makes it impossible to avoid getting sucked into the melody.  It's all synths and samples arranged digiatally, even though some of it sounds alot like intrumentals, which really aids the sound I was going for.  Made with Reason.

Enjoy and critique!

Why did you do that, out of curiosity?  What about Hitler do you find amusing?

Being german by descent, I find what he did disgusting and horrid, and I see no humor in it at all.

Perhaps you can explain?

Pre 3.0 we did a RL to the vents in bast.  Being all venty it was impossible for the aliens to acctually get into the damn rine base and finish us off.  Ended up getting a few HMGs off of RFK, holding a node for a good two minutes, and slowly but surely pushing out and turtle expanding over the map with heavies.  From the aliens prespective it was probably the most boring game ever, being that they basicly had won at 15 minutes, but couldn't drive the nails into the coffin and ended up being pushed back out at about an hour.

ns_caged: I was having my team rush for double so we could take down Vent hive, but skulks kept rushing us and getting there first. When the next group of marines spawned, I gave each one a pack of mines and sent them to double. When they got there, I dropped four armories. I had them drop mines all around the floor and armories and had them stand on top of the armories. For some reason, it worked.

Some of you might remember me, some of you may not.  (I'm looking at you Lightning Blue.) I'm an old veteran of NS from way back in 1.0, was there for LB's original clan and server (The Brotherhood IIRC) and was a beta tester for NS during the 2.0's.  I'm back from a long absence and am playing NS once again!  My new handle is Ephraim, but on the NS servers I go by "Ephraim // Sirus" just so people (might) recognize me.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to playing again with my friends of old !  See ya online.

I don't think they ever removed the damage FPS dependancy for the welder, they just nerfed the hell out of the damage it DID do and said it wasn't for attacking anyways.

you're lucky you were only kicked.  Common practice is a 6 hour temp ban.

[edit] for the record this is why I never use !admin in the forums either, because although it is publicly open to use, it should only be used by those who know what it is.  Hence not passing it around in public view.

You don't command for Exigent unless you're "kinda good", so I like to think I know a little about commanding, competitive or otherwise.

The point of attacking the hive isn't just to waste the res, it's to slow the alien team down.  One alien might have 40 res to re-drop it with, but that's 3 more minutes before they get 2 hive abilities and armor, and 3 more minutes for you to push the tech advantage you have.  Not everything is about 100% domination and forcing them to a point of no-return, delaying tactics are often necessary in order to stave off defeat long enough to gain competitive advantages.  If you can get the second hive down, your tech level is automatically better than the alien's level, so use the advantage to destroy their res base.  Start killing their RTs, and when you find another hive building, kill it too.  This can be repeated until they don't have anything left, while you have a full tech tree.  This is one of the things I mentioned already, it's exhausting their resource supply by forcing them to spend everything they have just to hold on.  What you're describing is exactly the opposite, the alien team is forcing you as the commander to spend everything you have, which is what you have to avoid in order to do the same to them.

The most common way to get a hive down is to kill all the skulks nearby and force the higher lifeforms to flee, all the while hitting the hive with whatever weapons you have that aren't needed to kill aliens.  sieges can work, but are very slow in comparison to simply pushing into the hive room to directly engage it.  The key to marine midgame (which is what you're describing, the point when at least one team reaches mid-tech level, mid being the AA or a second hive) is to withstand the explosion of alien tech and continue teching yourself.  This means defending your res nodes and not relying on the structures to do it themselves.  Actively moving marines to res nodes under attack is the number one thing that new commanders do not do.  They rely on electricity or turrets to defend areas for them, which is quite simply the wrong answer.  The cost of these structures versus their defense value is almost no comparison, aliens are intelligent players that can manipulate them in a way that renders them worthless.  Marines are also intelligent players, so use them for defense instead of turrets or eletricity when dealing with nodes.  The key to marine mid-game is getting the most out of what you have, and wasting resources on fruitless RT defense is not a good answer when compared to the strength of two hive aliens.

I'd give an undisclosed didget to see LMers shooting well enough to acctually kill all the lower lifeforms in a hive as well as chase away the large ones while still being able to shoot the hive down.
