I'll never, NEVER give someone lip for not getting into the chair. When I play(ed) marines, my attitude is this: I expect that we'll lose. I expect that we'll never even get a second node up. I fully expect that nobody will touch the chair in the first four minutes - or if somebody jumps in right away, that he will be content with turretting up MS and never even get a second node. Why? Because in half the games I played, that's what happened, and this way I wasn't that disappointed.

Furthermore, being comm is a stressful, unrewarding experience. You have three times as much to do as a normal rine, and you'll get snide remarks (if not outright flames) if you lose. Honestly, who wants that? You work your ass off, you try to pull off a victory, you lose because your team wants to sit right outside MS and shoot incoming skulks instead of capping nodes for you (or defending those nodes from rampaging Fades), and then you get smack talked at you for it. That's why I'll never, NEVER expect of anybody to even venture close to that chair. It's the chair of hot coals and needle cushions, the chair of nail-biting and soul-rending.

And I have all the more respect for those that dare sit in it anyway, let alone do it well. I haven't even mentioned the crappy interface yet.

And if I ever play NS again, I'll probably kick anyone who as much as scowls in the direction of the comm. Even if he actually deserves it. Because anything, ANYTHING that makes the comm's job harder in any way at all is a crime against your entire team.

Which also means that you shouldn't all run away at the start of the game. Because a comm needs his team. Don't leave him all alone.

i just took my hand at the chair again and it was ... unique

ns_eclipse
for one, to prevent armory humpers (and guard the base too) i gave diablus a shotgun (his model was boked so liku got it)
a shotgun rush on a hive was stopped deat before the team cleared triad
court martials were given to people who chose to abuse the armory
a lone turret was errected to win the game

we had no chance ... but it was fun :p

Aye, a few weeks ago (on DSL), I was forced to comm. I hadn't commed since about 1.02, so I just basically went for a skillless shotty rush, and we almost won. Wasn't a very fun game, but I guess I commed again.

I always comm, always. Most of you know that. Most of the time I do good and win esp on Origin. I can win if I get nodes. I can win if people go in groups of TWO. I can win if MY MIC WORKED. I have been in a recent losing binge cause I have to type all my commands and I can use the voice comm like I normally do. The main reason I lose is because I play too defensivly. When a round starts and im on rines right thing I say before that last chime sound is "I got comm."

Defensive play is actually the most common reason for losing the game. Because aliens don't play defensively, strangely enough. They just don't. And once the Bladed Messiah™ arrives, it's all over anyway.

Actually, I've often wanted to try a semi-defensive push just to see what happens, but I doubt I could get people to do it. Something like capping 2-3 RTs outside of MS and then having half the team JUST patrol RTs. Have the other half go alien RT hunting and perform harassment actions. 4 RTs held for five minutes is more than enough to win the game on. It's just that it seems unlikely that anyone will want to play defender. The usual pub reaction is to just GO GO GO and shoot anything in your path. Asking someone to STAY at an RT, I'm afraid, would just get me the ejection seat.

I always leave MS in the beggining of the game. Usually i dont leave until i help get the ip and the armory up. Then i start to make a path along one side of the map, capping all the rt's along the way up to the hive...

There's a few commanders who dropped them all for me  :)

Not on maps with over 10 or more RTs - the aliens having 5-6 will guarantee a loss here, if you don't pressure them and they leisurely get a 2nd hive and 3 fades within 7 minutes.

As a general rule, I go for RTs because I trust my aim, and my luck (I don't want to go to the hive side  ^_^ ) to keep me alive long enough to get a fair number of RTs.  And let's face it, when you get your base up, what comm doesn't want more res right away?  I think it helps, it cuts down the alien's advantage over marines at the start by giving them so many nodes.  And who knows? Maybe I can catch a gorge all alone who hasn't dropped his node yet.

I used to just baseguard / build... until I tried commanding a few times.  I really learned to appreciate those who take the initiative to find rt's off the bat and make ground for me w/o me giving them direct orders....

So now if I see someone "rambo off" at the start, typically I follow them, I'd rather be rambo's sidekick than rambo herself! ^_^

Tho I'm always happy to hang back and build.

i'm a big fan of building base while the rest of hte guys run off, as long as someone makes sure tehre IS a commandor......

in most clan games i've played in you rarely see the whole team stick around in base to build, a couple rambos to get fast rts and/or kil some gorges is always a good thing.

It can go the other way though. Being in games where the whole team stays in base, like they think its a combat map, you just know you are going to lose since the aliens just pin you in and control the map. Next thing 4 oni are rampaging thorugh your base. At least if people are attacking (in this version) you know there is a major chance you will win.

Well.. every time i got 'rine, i tend to run out of base and grab nodes ASAP on the opposite side of the map where the hive is.

Is that rambo'ing or not?

When I hop in the chair, the ideal thing to already be happening is everyone scurrying from base with 1-2 left to build.  You NEED to get out on the field fast, because you can guarantee that those skulks will be.  The alien team is most vunerable in that first minute, when everyone's capping nodes and hasn't gone back to skulk yet.

Ramboing to fetch nodes will earn you Commlove.  Even if there's a major attack going on, one person to rambo is much welcome - the aliens won't be watching their nodes for a second so the lone shotgunner can really do some damage to RTs.  I love nothing more to be in a very tense battle, see the order icon pop up, and have it move me to the other edge of the map where a lone marine (<3 fatty) is waiting to recap some random node a skulk chewed down.  The last thing you want is to put everything in a desperate hive siege/shotgun rush, then realize afterwards you're down to 1-2 nodes.

i constantly have my minimap open, looking for red dots, and rts we should have capped, given our base location (i.e. relocation to cargo bay on tanith, we better damn keep acidic and fusion rts up).

Its a shame theres no indication for other marines (or comm) that someone has their minimap open. If someone has it open it shows they:-

a) don`t know where they are going? and therefore need directions....

B) are getting used to the map and may be able to give you directions....

c) are thinking about the game tactically and therefore should be followed.....

d) mixture of all of the above  :D

If there was an indicator and they were going the right way you could cover them so they can help you out too....

/2 cents

Hm.

I always run off to cap nodes or harass aliens, either alone or with others. It's vital for a marine victory to spread out asap, so I feel it's my duty to do it. We've grown so experienced that we don't need the comm babysitting us all the time, right?
