Off Topic / New comp, suggestions?

I have 2 suggestions to make, or rather one wrapped up into 2 parts.

The first is the CPU. As you've just found out from Zero7 and me in IRC, first-gen Prescott CPUs- that is, the ones still labeled with their speed rather than the new intel model number- suck. They overheat and are inferior in many ways to their older and newer counterparts.

Therefore, you should switch out the CPU. I'd recommend the Pentium 4 630 (here) for $245 or if that's too much then the 530J (here) for a more reasonable $184.

Since that's a different pin package, you'd need to switch motherboards. This one is functionally equal to the one you currently have selected.

That's all. Everything else is ok.

GAIM has a good interface.

And there's lots of non-ported linux software with excellent interfaces.

There's also a lot of crap, but there's a lot of crap windows software too.

Legionnaired: I've been told I look like a younger James Taylor.

Anyway, here goes.

Jawbreaker: Mid-90s indie rock band sometimes unfairly credited with the invention of emo. (They're much better than that.) Broken up since '96 but with 4 studio albums, 1 live album, and one b-sides collection there's plenty of them to occupy. BobTheJanitor is also a fan if I recall.

David Byrne: Former Talking Heads frontman. Brilliantly odd lyricist.
