Title: Settlers of Catan
Post by: @gentOrange on February 12, 2005, 05:33:28 PM
I was talking to Swiftspear today about Settlers of Catan and what a great game it is, and began to wonder if anyone else on LM was hip and played this great game.

I have played an online version in the past so I had no trouble finding another (http://www.endlessrealms.com/content/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=49).  Would anyone be up for getting together and playing online occasionally? We can use other java sites if they offer better interface or...something.

I'd be down.  I personally use the downloadable client at wannagame.net (even though the site is in Dutch, shout out to Wither :) ), so you might want to check that out.  I haven't played online in forever, but I still play the board game with friends from time to time.  Just played 3 weeks ago I think...

I'll download that client and check it out. It had BETTER be awesome :p

Doobie is it bychance called pioneers of peru? Just a rename to avoid legal issues? Or is that a different game altogether.

Alright hopefully you have some good maps. I've never played Cities and Knights so I'm going to be a bit HORRIBLE on these rules. Can it play vanilla settlers?

I just finshed playing a sweet game called Puerto Rico. I bought it on recommendation of a total stranger who said noone he knew would play Settlers anymore because Peurto Rico was that much better. Well, it is. I checked the boardgamegeeks website and it's apparantly number one rated. So if my recomendation isn't enough, surely the droves of people who rate it their favorite is. I would advise any of you who have a regular settlers group to go out and pick it up. It took us about 2 hours to play (me being the onle person in the group to play a game of this type and having to teach) and was very well recieved by the group I played with.

I was thinking we play settlers tommorow (sunday), either java or the version doobie posted ,which is a .com addy not a .net. I'd prefer java as a first because I don't know the rules to the other games and it randomly creates the playboard which is how I've always played. So if you're in come to IRC and make !catan a highlight so you can be notified as to when we are going to play.

Doobage since you don't come to IRC I'll add you to an instant messenger and contact you when all is right okay?

Knock yerself out.  I personally like to play Cities and Knights if I'm gonna play online, because I always play Vanilla in person (don't want to spend the ungodly amount to purchase the actual expansion sets).  But if you want to play Vanilla that's fine with me.  Just send me an IM.

You know, I'd be down for this too.  I prefer Vanilla rules too ('cause I know them).  I'll keep an eye out in IRC.

We finally got the client version (which had been recently renamed to Pioneers of Peru, unbeknownst to me) working last night.  AO, Zero7, and I had ourselves a little three-way where I ore-mongered my way to victory.  It supports up to 6 players, so we can get some games going on.  Just send me an IM if you ever do, and if I'm online I'll probably be down!

I'd be happy to teach anyone Cities and Knights if they want to learn.  I think that one is more fun than vanilla with 3-4 players.

And yeah, I'm not online much these days, but I'll try to be on so I can be available for games.  :)   AIM: d00biedan

settlers of catan is a board game designed for 4 people.
Basically you are trying to build an establishment and controll as many reasources as possible. Its a horribly simplistic game to learn, yet almost impossible to master :p
lots of fun for the whole family.
go do a google for settlers of catan and see what pops up.

Personally I think it's best with 5-6.  Actually in my experience 5 players on a 6 player board is the ideal scenario, as the board isn't too congested.  For fewer than 5, I'd just as soon play Cities and Knights (Ritter und Stadt ;) )

I've played games with 8 players before - the folks that got me into Catan in the first place would take two 4 player boards and put them side-by-side without the water inbetween to create one huge island.  Good times.

Whenever you play with 5 or more people, the rules are modified so that you can build and buy development cards between every person's turn.  Otherwise you'd have 30 cards every turn by the end of the game.

I love C&K, but it really doesn't work well with seafairers maps.  Fun as hell on a normal octogon board though.

Anyways, we need to start a game some time!
