Title: Things You Miss About Aol
Post by: TheChuckster on January 31, 2004, 03:12:35 PM
This one is for all of you 56kers out there who miss their AOL <3.

Personally I miss the chat rooms, the download channels that go at 300 bytes per second, WELCOME YOU GOT MAIL, and the VB5 private chat. Gotta love home made punting apps, .bas files, KNK4Life, and phadez (a blend of two colors created by HTML tags). Yeah those were the good old days. My word scrambler bot was awesome. And then AOL would keep patching all of our punts and we would just keep finding more bugs. And then everyone traded punters with each other and had 1000+ collections of them. Several though were viruses and I even got my comp wiped out by one. Kind of strange when you run a .EXE and nothing happens but your hard drive starts going crazy. I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and saw DELTREE and paniced. My files were gone for good, along with my punters. Of course today I realize just how immature the VB5 chat really was. People would scroll swearwords right and left and the whole room was flaming each other the whole time. :D You were kind of limited though as far as chats went because AOL firewalled your internet and blocked just about every port, including port 6667. This became dubbed the AOL ban by DALnet regulars, which I managed to sneak on by an IRC proxy my friend hosted on port 80. Of course, now I think AOL shut those rooms down. Bad AOL... but now I have my cable internet so who cares?

things i miss:

trying to log on for hours on end
finally logging on and landing a 28.8 slot
the horrible netspeeds
theur claims to be faster than everyone else
the spambot infested chatrooms
the horrible speeds
their horrible ui
the fact that you cant keep a connection open if you try to close their hideous main window
the fact that all of the above still apply if you use cable (except the fact that you are now guaranteed a slot of 36.6 ... but not during peak hours)
the hot coals and brimstone

why the hell is Snoop Dog in there? What does he possibly have to do with AOL? I never liked AOL anyways, just b/c SD is in a commercial and says 4 words (if you count the last one as a word) then i'm supposed to like it? Bah...

Haha monkey! :D Funny commercial.

I never used AOL in my life so I don't miss anything. But had I used it, I know I would not miss anything.

The reason snoop dogg is in the commercial is they make a blatant reference to him talking about using one of his cds instead of AOL.

I actually use @OL.

Worked for them, hated it. Most corporate BS I've ever had on a job. Now let us never speak of this again.

AOL used to be good back in the pre-cable days.  Then it sucked and then there was cable.  Never looked back.

Hehe, I picked up AOL when it was just starting to pick up like 7 or 8 years ago.  There used to be all these RPG clubs that would have wars and spy on each other's meetings and crap.  Ya, it was nerdy, hehe.

I'd have to say what I miss most are the regs on the RPGA and Best RPG Evar boards... ::sniff::

I never understood why Geocities (back when it was a good free webpage place) and numerous other perfectly fine sites on the whole was blocked, even on the slot just below Full Access or whatnot.

I think most sites were blocked even with full access was because of som port or something? 6667 I think, even though I olny used Aol for one year and it was Hell!!

Beyond that, nothing.
