Post by: Golgothaa on May 15, 2004, 03:01:09 PM
Saw Troy friday, just wanted people to know, it was a damn good movie, and would recomend seeing it, its roughly 2 hours and 40 min long.  Only problem with the movie is they made some stuff up at the end to wrap it up, other then that, awesome as heck. Great acting, awesome fight scenes, especially brad pitt being archilles (or however u spell it) GO SEE IT :)

You shouldn't see it if you know care at all about greek literature.  But I suppose if you're an illiterate heathen the movie would be suitable.

If you ask me, Achilles was the biggest wuss EVAR. He gets hit in the heel by an arrow and dies. No wonder Troja could withstand the siege for ten years.

ever heard of the echillies heel? or however it's spelt

even the cyclops was killed because they rushed him and undid a screw in his heel draining his blood.

IRL if you are shot in the echillies heel you will not be able to put any weight on that leg at all and will suffer tramatic bleeding.

so in greek lit   the echillies heel was named to be the weakest spot on a soilder slashing it once would ground you opponant and offent lead to a easy kill.

Troy, not Troja.  And it was a poisoned arrow.

I'm afraid to tell you, but you're completely wrong on that origin.  It's called the Achilles heel because it was the only place on his body that was vulnerable to attack.  His mother, a river goddess, dipped him in the river Styx as a newborn to make him invulnerable.  But the spot on the heel where her hand was holding him didn't get wet.  Therefore Paris was able to kill Achilles by finding out his secret vulnerability and shooting an arrow there.

The Achilles heel is therefore a term for the one weakness of even the strongest enemy.

dude...ever read mythology before?  Perhaps the Iliad?  The Odyssey?  For christ's sake - telling the story of Achilles is like giving away the ending of DuckHunt.
