Off Topic / Is it me or is gamesurge dead?

Not too demanding I think, but I dont think running one is a good idea

It's a lot of work, for starters, and most of them are for linux, iirc.

yes, and usually theyre conducted by a single user. i've been on plenty of different IRC networks for long periods of time and none of them seemed to have this much trouble with it. why is it that gamesurge is the only network that gets hit so frequently?

Well, you are right in the sense that they are usually run by one user.. but they use many computers that have some type of trojan on them, so the attacks come from a bunch of different IP addresses

You obviously don't understand a DDoS attack.  It has nothing to do with the security of the network.  It involves hundreds or thousands of connections being opened to gamesurge each second.. it overloads the ircd

Off Topic / I need an FTP client
« on: May 27, 2005, 12:58:03 PM »
Its not required..  I had thought it fixed a problem I was having, but it didnt.
I'm wondering if its my router doing it, as I can't get directory listings for directories with large numbers of files.  The logs directory is the main thing I notice, I can browse pretty much everything else other then that.

Filezilla is what I use.  Make sure you disable PASV if you connect to the LM ftp :)
SmartFTP is what I use for mass downloading of the logs, because it supports downloading as many files at a time concurrently as I want.  Filezilla doesnt seem to support this.

General / Annoying pauses when accessing lm.org

Anyone else seeing this? I'll click a link in the forums, and have to wait 10-15 seconds for it to load.

As far as I can tell, the problem isn't on my side, as traceroutes look crappy after they leave SBC's network:

Running custom firmware?  There are a bunch of non-offical firmwares for that router that enable all sorts of nice features, you could try one of them.

before you do that, update to the latest offical firmware.

Either the guys computer was trojaned, or he can't remeber his own password.  Those boxes save you from having to close steam and restart it.  They are part of steam.  I recieved one while connecting to LM, and I doubt lb wants my password :p

Please see this, and follow the steps mentioned in it.

First, by cheating I mean you suspect aimbot/wallhacks.  If a person is speedhacking, go get an admin on IRC, speedhacking really isn't hard to detect.

So, someone is cheating.
What to do: (Follow in order)
*This assumes that there is no admin connected to the server.
*Go spec if you can, and noone else is there.  (You don't want to unbalance the teams, but if you can go spec with it only being like 5-6 or 5-4, then theres no problem)
*Record a demo. (record name)
*Preform these commands in your console
clear
status
condump

Don't do "clear;status;condump" because it won't work.
*Continue recording demo's, the more the better (within reason..)
*Zip, rar, or bz2 the demos.  Find the condump that was created.
*Paste the status part of the condump into an email, attach the file, give the message a name like ChanServ - cheater, and send it to darkmage AT snet D0T net

What not to do:
*Tell the person you think they are cheating.
*Mention to your teammates you think X is cheating
*Panic.
*Jump on IRC, and spam !admin multiple times
*Go spec if someone else is there. (If its a non-slotters you can)
*Break any rules.
*Send me demos of people you think that are wallhacking, when the only demo you send has the person with MT or SoF all the time.

After you have sent the demo, I'll look at it in a day or two, and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

Dual core means two processors in one.  Of course thats going to preform better then a single core processor.

I also recommend 64 bit.
That and at least 1gb of memory.

I wouldn't go with a bundle package.. check out whats available unbundled.

Dont forget some nice thermal compound... I got Arctic Silver 5, and ArcticClean to get rid of the old thermal shit.

If your going 64bit, you might as well go PCI-E, instead of AGP
