Title: GRR, my fps is screwed up
Post by: SlickWill on April 19, 2005, 11:28:59 AM
For no reason, my fps dropped from hovering about 100, to 45-50 and even into the 20's for no reason.  It's really making gameplay quite laggy... I have a 9800 pro, don't think I should be having these issues.  Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about what is going on?

have u tried checking ur running processes when this is happening to see if anything might be eating up all ur cpu?

i had this happen once and it appeared firefox was eating up all my cpu power, so i closed it and everything went back to normal..

Do the usual. Check for spyware, viruses, etc. Defragment, checkdisk. Turn off useless programs. Close useless processes (which ones are useless, though, is up to you).

On a somewhat related note, I have an FX 5700, and my FPS is about 50-60. I can't really afford a new card (or new system) at the moment...

Is this normal? I've set the FPS cap to 100 and such.

Make sure you're still running in OpenGL, in the NS options. Make sure the OpenGL settings for your 9800 are not screwy. Reinstall your graphics drivers or update to new ones, although sometimes new ones will screw up old games like Half-Life.

Oh and obviously if you made any major software or hardware changes, that would be something to look at.

you won't be able to get more than 60fps if you have v-sync on kids

And all steam games have that annoying fpsmax default of 70. Silly valve and their ninja variables.

There also used to be a lot of bugs between HL and radeon cards. Random radeon cards would get crappy fps in all HL engine games for like no reason at all, I know it happened to Guspaz on his card for a while (which he complained about to no end...)

Thank god my 9700 works *huggles 99fps*

your monitor refresh rate should be set to high enough

About the video card settings...
it's good to use the same resolution on your desktop as your game. and sometimes you can get better video performance by changing the color depth on the desktop, and if you have xp...stop using all the extra "fluff" that makes windows look all snazzy.

ATI recently released some faulty drivers. Try downloading the latest ones, either through Microsoft Update or from ATI's webpage: It fixed the exact problem you're describing there for me.

Hell no.  I held a constant 100 FPS with an FX5200.  Do you have vsynch enabled?

vsync - vertical synchronization. I'm pretty sure it syncs your monitor refresh rate with your maximum FPS... not sure though.

Pretty much.  Hence if you have a refresh rate of 60hrz you should be FPSing at 60fps.  This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depends on alot of other factors, like how your video card handles frame refreshes.

it keeps the image from tearing, it syncs the upper part and lower part of the screen.

Hmm, my fps dropped a couple of weeks back, too. From a solid 72 (refresh rate max :( ), to an average of 40ish. Keep meaning to fix it, but can never be bothered.

I'll have to try some of these suggestions.

Any of these drastic changes in FPS should really only be caused by some change that you made.

Check and make sure your AGP rate is still at 8X. I had some problems with mine resetting to off with my 9800 Pro.

My AGP Speed only goes up to 4x. Is that normal?

It's different for each video card.
