Post by: Grimm on August 06, 2004, 12:59:20 PM
Box Wars Main Page (http://www.planethalflife.com/boxwar/)

The basic idea of the mod is playing on maps littered with crates of various shapes and sizes, and each player is a crate of some sort him/herself. By staying completely still, you blend in with every other box in the map, and moving is the only way anyone can spot you; You don't see anyone else's weapons that they're holding, and they don't see yours.

I've played this a couple times with a friend of mine, and even with just one other person it was entertaining. I think it would be pretty cool if we could get a bunch of us into a game of it. Even if we only play for a week like many of the other "fad mods" as Niteowl put it, I'd say it would be a pretty cool diversion for a while.

Of course, with any mod that's basically been dead for quite a while, not all of the download links work, although the Fileplanet link should be fine.

Not steam compatible at all. And hasn't been touched in a loooooooong time. Forums are totally dead as well. Go look at the last post in the forums and the date on it. (and see who it's by  ;) )

Bah, he's right; I try to start a listenserver for the game, it just completely closes. No flicker of a startup or anything, just *poof*. Gonna have to find some way to fix this...

P.S. Bob, you little so-and-so... (I saw the last post made).

No wonder their forums died. I mean, c'mon... Dark blue background, slightly lighter blue letters? Completely unreadable.

We're umm... not going to be running the mod. It's completely unusable on the Steam network. And since WON is going down (Is down?) that leaves the game useless.

I played this back on WON a very long time ago.  It is in fact a very unique mod and it's totally possible to blend in and be totally ignored.  You need to move to find ammo and find other boxes, but doing so leaves you open to attack.  What to do?  Be CLEVER.

yes, I also played it a long time ago on won, before my departure from hl mods, where I'd try anyone I could dl... It's very fun, and has many moments.

but if your interested in games like those also try =

Snow Wars!
Snark Wars!
Surprise mod!
Snark Racing!
The Opera!

all great in their own way.

I wasn't very sneaky about anything, I just ran around shooting and crowbaring every crate I found until my friend ran. Or I'd wait somewhere with the sniper, watch him get some weapons, then *pow*.

When I first played it a few years ago, I didn't like it.  It was way too obvious which boxes were people and which weren't.  Maybe it changed, but it still sucks that it's dead.

Sounds like it'd get old quickly.

And tharsis, WOAH that's a big sig, see if you can make it smaller or find another one. We have sig size limits. For specifics, see LB or JHunz or and admin or someone who knows what the hell they're doing. The restrictions are something like 400x100 or less and under 25KB or something like that.

Wouldnt it be nothing but one HUGE campfest for like 30 minutes until someone FINALLY decides to move and gets 29545873462378463826284 bullets in their chest?

With a group like us, we know we wouldn't be lame and just sit around all the time like that.

Ah, this reminds me of my time when I played Quake 2 over the net. There were many fun things to do, including making a model and skin of a regular box (which would be downloaded onto their computer automatically). I can still hear it now... "OMFG THE WALL JUST RAILED ME!" Now that made for some very fun games.

But as to this mod, I can see it growing very old, very quickly. I also see why it died, beacause after playing NS for so long, I have memorized just about every inch of the maps, and once you do that in Box wars, its just a matter of shooting the box that doesn't belong. It is too bad that it does not work, because it would have at least been fun for a bit.

There was this cool HL2 test mod created for HL1 called sniper wars or something.

they were testing all this stuff including a cool map creator on a server.

It was quite bugged. But the cool thing about it was, there was no official type of map. the Devs made it so every map was brand new because the server generated  the map before the rounds started. So you never played on the same map. It was quite cool, actually.... it was very cool.

If boxwars had something like that, it would be fun i suppose.

I think it would be cool for any mod to have a randomly generated map each time it's played; no game would be the same as others. And I don't mean the same like "Last time I jumped left and shot at that guy, but this time I jumped right...".

Avara had a few maps that did something like this. Since all the boxes could be moved around (and you could even use them to crush other players with, assuming you knew which box they were...), the maps quickly stopped looking like themselves after a few moments of fighting, so you couldn't just remember the box positions and shoot the out-of-place one.

Actually, there's a way to move stuff around between round that apparently isn't utilized very often, for some reason or another.

http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Tutor...orial.php?id=36 (http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Tutorials/tutorial.php?id=36)

so yeah - with massive entity work it's possible to move every box around.  Of course, people might just be able to memorize each of these variants, but it would be a lot tougher.
