And is it a) HL2 compatible, and B) better then my integrated card?

I really need a new one, tired of having 6 fps on some maps

The best PCI card is the FX 5200.

The question is, is it any good :p

Time to go for AGP, dev.

Short of replacing my motherboard, nic, audio, I really dont think thats an option :/

And if I would have to go that far, I would just get a new comp

Get a new computer. Having an AGP slot is just a key component of any machine these days.

All PCI cards are from newer-smaller companies that you've never heard of.  They're also more expensive than thier AGP counterpart.  A 128 MB PCI card will cost you more than a 128 MB AGP card.

I'd just wait it out until you can get a new computer.

If you really want a new card (that's good), you can get a pretty good motherboard inexpensively to allow this. If you were to settle for the best PCI card, you might as well get a new motherboard and a AGP card. AGP cards that are equal to the PCI card are still very cheap.

Hold out a little while longer for mobos with PCI-X slots. AGP is about to go the way of the dodo. It's not the best time to invest in a new board and new expensive AGP card, trust me.

PCI-X is completly useless at the momment.  AGP will not be replaced for at least 2-3 years.  We barely even use AGP 8X now.

Yeah, the PCI Express cards aren't improving much over the regular AGP ones right now. But like Bob said, they will later.

Thats part of the reason I didn't want to replace my motherboard

Boards with PCI-X are already coming out. You can't talk about anything in computers in terms of 2-3 years. Three years ago P4s had just recently come out and everyone was impressed that the 2 GHz barrier had been broken. Now you can get 2 gig chips for pocket change. In another two or three years, PCI-X will probably be showing its age, coming with every new board, even on crappy OEM systems from Dell or Gateway (if Gateway is still in business by then) and there will be some new amazing thing on the horizon.

No one has mentioned this so I thought I would... Most Motherboards come with the NIC and Audio integrated on the board.  And they really aren't all that bad either.

I don't much reckon that PCI-E will be a standard in every computer until at least this time next year, so really, there's still a year's worth of time where a moderately priced AGP card (say 9600-9800) running on a relatively cheap motherboard with AGP 8x (my board cost ~£40, works perfectly) just to bide your time until "true" PCI-E cards are released and the cost of new technology drops.

PCI-E is running great as it is, and yes, 8x AGP is being used. What you're talking of is the fact that graphics cards are not utilising PCI-E slots to their full potential. That's true. Right now i don't think there is a "true" PCI-E video card on the market, i could well be wrong, but cards such as the 6800 are "bridged" PCI-E, which is basically just a cheap hack and offers little to no gain over it's AGP counterpart. The reason for the bridging is so you can buy a motherboard with PCI-E, which won't have AGP, and still be able to run a graphics card.

I'd much rather wait, get a new mobo and graphics card when I wont be stuck with something like PCI again.  So, once  I see a PCI-E mobo on newegg, then I'll start thinking harder.
This all depends how HL2 preforms :)

Meh, PCI-E mobo's don't come in the AMD variety quite yet (unless your up for a dual CPU opteron board, which would pwn, but that's another story) so if you really want a PCI-E slot board, best wait till they come with socket 940's anyways or else your just going to regret the fact that you bought one.  P4's are pretty much on the path of the dinosaur themselfs...

Uh, if PCI can get faster then AGP for graphics cards... what's stopping AGP from getting even faster then PCI?

Dev, if you really want a good mobo and video card, just wait until the end of the year. By then, the new motherboards will be out along with the new video cards. The new video cards will push the prices of the current top of the line cards down. You can use the money you save on the video card to buy a pimped out motherboard and processor (with some extra money of course that you will still need :p).

EDIT: Bad spelling mistake.

PCI-X has about twice the amount of transfer jumpers, the hard limit for the AGP is the maximum amount of peices of metal they can put into the slot to allow data transfer between the card and the mobo.  PCI slots are just bigger.  Although cards still haven't quite reached the limitations on 8x AGP yet, it won't be long before the PCI-X slots are acctually needed, because the AGP slot just can't facititate enough data movement.
