fewl, its true but the lack of bayonete means that, in an "oh crap! I ran around a corner and there's a dude" moment, you are not a death giving laser ninja bayonette type guy. Instead, the smg promptly owns the pants off of you with punch, mostly becasue of his fist of fury. (my current record is 2 guys with  bullets followed by 4 kills with the fist)

i  used to love dod back in the day.  back when a map lasted for four hours and no one won.  seeing playerswith over 100 kills was par for the course.  for course then came dod 1.0 which sped up game play a lot.

the source version i feel has many of the original plusses the only real minuses being the inclusion of things like avalanche, which has always been a terror, and anzio, which is utter chaos. maps like flash with serious choke points etc are much more the classic.

i also have to say many of the most rediculous things have been removed. for example the kar 98 is not longer the ultimate weapon.  no more one hit kill in melee and at range.

i only wish it came with russians:)

so after taking several years off from playing dod, i played the source version yesterday.  i have to say that i enjoyed it thouroghly.

My love affair with the mg42 seems to continue as if it were yesterday..

but i miss other things like the bayonette and the semi auto german sniper rifle.( i know its been gone for a long time but man)

any way any thoughs and or complaints?

i have to say that it runs rather nicely on my machine, around 50 fps most of the time. It seems to gradually creep down but its only noticable after aoubt 8 hours...

I mean, I  didnt spend all of yesterday playing this game... oh wait, yes, I did.

monowall is indeed sweet. I'm running it on a  Soekris box as my router intalled to a 64meg cf card.

as you your windows replacement stuff i find that either gnome or kde both are very fucntional. while some command line bludgeoning may be required  they both come with rather good administration tools.

As to file sharing NFS IS AWESOME. couple it with things like ssh and ftp acces and you have a very functional server admin package.
for those of you who need more than a command line: http://fedoranews.org/mediawiki/index.php/..._Remote_Desktop

i suggest fedora 4. its rather shiny.

Gaming is another story. supposedly cedega actually works and allow reasonalbe gaming experineces it is also a pay to play service. however, this does mean that is updated with great frequency.

as to debian versus KDE. its apples and oranges.KDE s a window manager meaking that it does all teh desktop stuff you expect from winodws. while debian is the acutal OS.

Well, obviously ..

it seems there is a man called biggles who in the end does in fact deliver the goods.

in this case sadly the goods are 500,000 tons of rubber.

however i find the titles of teh 98 books he stars in hilarious and and felt like sharing. they come with fashionable illustrations and everthing

enjoy

Mapping / Source forts: suggestions
« on: August 11, 2005, 11:22:06 PM »
Ok, today i decided to make a source forts map.

i havent played it very much yet. So, i have some important questions.

1. How big should the map be? right now the server is running at 10 players max and that is my target. how small is too small?

2. how much should separate the forts, or, should I have a no mans land?

3. should there be a way to get around the forts? like the rafters in that one level?

4. any one object to outside?

5. why did the soviets have to make such freaking huge nucler reactors?

finally,

6.  Why does it seem like no one who maps for this game understands vis?

also if you have an additonal suggestion, please let me know.

I think a large part of the problem is the fact that it is summer time and many people have other stuff to do.
