What resolution do you play in?
-
1600x1200. I WIN. :D
-
1600x1200 =P
-
reso-what?!??
all i know is i play in widescreen mode, and it's puuuurdy.
-
On most games I try to set it to 1024 x 768, even if it means sacrificing some other grapic aspects of a game (detail, lighting, etc).
-
2x2
-
1280x1024 since meh lcd doesn't have 1600x1200 or i'ld play at that one
and no it is not my monitors fault for the in game brightness before you people go and say that i'm telling you it isn't it's fault :p
-
1152x864
-
aye dark, my lcd only goes 1280x1024 so thats how i play all my games :D

You know what happens if you watch a widescreen movie on a normal television? One of three things: Either you cut away the sides of the picture to make it fit. Or you leave black bars at the top and bottom to make it fit. OR you squeeze the too-wide picture into the frame anyway, in which case the dimensions of the picture become all distorted.
Now widescreen has 16:9 dimensions, while a normal television or computer screen has 4:3 dimensions. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960 and 1600x1200 are all resolutions that follow the 4:3 ratio. 1280x1024, however, has a 5:4 ratio. What does this mean? It doesn't fit your screen. The picture is too high for your screen, and has to be squished.
Try this: Go into MS Paint, in a resolution of 1280x960. Paint a perfect circle (hold down the shift key while using the circle tool to get a perfect circle). As large as possible. Now get a ruler (or measuring tape) and measure that circle, first from top to bottom, then from left to right. Notice how the two measurements are almost exactly the same? Well they should be. The small variations are because it's hard to measure on a screen, and because your display is probably not 100% perfectly aligned. Try to align it as good as possible, measure again if necessary. Note, again, how the two measurements, both top to bottom and left to right, are almost exactly the same. Now, switch to 1280x1024. After aligning your screen as good as possible, make the same measurements again. Notice how the circle is suddenly a lot wider than it is tall? Yep, it's no longer a circle, just an oval. If you look carefully, you can see the difference as you switch back and forth between the resolutions.
Now you know why you don't want 1280x1024. Go with 1280x960 instead.
For even more glaring examples, try setting your monitor to 1280x720 or 1600x900 if you can. That's widescreen, 16:9. You should easily spot the difference.
Oh, I used to play NS in 1280x960 I think. I play most non-HL games in 1024x768, except for Halo, which gets 800x600. At 800x600, I can turn on ALL the candy and still cruise along without any stuttering. And specular looks real sweet.
And isn't this thread blatant spam?
-
no, not spam, it's a question, ppl are answering it. and yes, when i play NS, there are black bars on the top and bottom :p
-
Well, I play at a 1280x1024 resolution (I don't plan to change, since I'm used to it).
-

So it's like your watching a DVD while your playing NS!
R U A MAN CUS THEY CANT DO 2 THINGS AT THE SAME TIME??

1152x864
-
i created the thread because someone told me that they play at 800x600 and anything larger is stupid, so i was wondering...
-
1024x768
I think something larger then this is stupid because fonts become nanomolecular in height and impossible to read without giving your monitor oral sex.
-
1280x1024 on a Geforce 4 MX 440 ^_^.. Still 80fps =]
-
ooh i had one of those cartman, it pretty much rocked, great performance but no dx9 support :p
-
Cartman2b,Jun 12 2004, 04:10 AM] 1280x1024 on a Geforce 4 MX 440 ^_^.. Still 80fps =]
i had one of those before i got my 9800 pro and i got 100 fps with it ^_^
i still get 100 fps or more with my new card <3
btw i checked and i really play at 1280x960 since at the highest resoultion my computer can support the netgraph stuff is abnormally large and a pain to read
-
800x600 to avoid teh lag
-
1280x1024 - my lcd reccomended resolution
-
ooh i had one of those cartman, it pretty much rocked, great performance but no dx9 support :p
HAR HAR MINE DOES <3
-
I like to play in 1600x1200, however my monitor only supports 1280x1024, 21" was to the trash :(
-
Usually I'll play at 1152 x 864.
But I'm gonna up it today and see if it makes me happy.
-
Seems like I'm the only one who has a 4:3 monitor...
-
Yeah lolbeer, 1280x960 is distorted on my monitor :p, while 1280x1024 isn't. I spent many hours switching back and forth between 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x960, and 1280x1024. I used 1152x864 until I got my r9600 pro, used to have a geforce 2 mx 200 hafaf. Then once I upgraded I went up to meh max which is 1280x1024, at 1280x960 my icons are teh SKINNEH! But I guess I could adjust my monitor so they wouldn't be.... even though without adjustment at 1152x864 its not distorted, neither is 1280x1024, and 1024x768 isn't either... But, my monitor IS a piece of ^^..... so yeah. Ooh I also have the option of 1280x768! Horrible horrible.
But yeah, back to ingame, I usually either use 1152x864, or 1280x1024. I use 1280x1024 in Half-life because my framerate doesn't get hurt RAWR, and my monitor can't even hit 100fps >_>.
-
I tried moving DOWN to 800x600 today... my screan when sync out of range.. so i had to go back up :)
-
I play in whatever resolution the computer that I happen to be on is set at
I don't get that much NS so I have to savor it
-
1600x1200
my lcd recommends it :D
-
1280x1024 - Native (and max) resolution on my LCD. Anything else (except 640x480) looks blurry.
That means I play at a higher resolution and in some games have to turn the eye candy down a bit, though not much with my 9800 pro. <3
-
I play in 1280x800. I have a wide screen laptop. It's nice. :)
I actually play in 800x600 or 1024x768 with my desktop even though it is capable of much higher. I personally believe since the pixels are larger, it's easier to aim, because I have higher accuracy when I play at lower resolutions.
-
yah rada, i've found that, another wierd thing i noticed is that i play better when i max my fps at 60, rather than runnin git all the way up to 100(like i can, but usually don't). either way, 1280x1024, anything less makes the text un naturally large for me...i can't stand big things on my computer screen :-(

Hey, I said on first page I have 1024x768, and I still firmly believe me and (after the verbal lashing) bob are the only ones on earth who understand how refresh rates work, and why 60 hz is the devil.
-
I understand how refresh rates work. I taught Bob everything he knows!
And no, you didn't. K stop with the obnoxious colors and fonts, it doesn't make what you have to say any more important.
-
1280x1024 @ 85Hz
I can actually take a still shot of my screen without half of it being blocked out by dark bands of non-refreshness :p

Could you quit editing my posts....It's really lame.

I feel for you. 1024x768 unless I can get my dad to buy me a huge CRT that does 1600x1200 at 85hz. Ah, a man can dream . . .
-
Golly! I'm lucky that my 5 year old viewsonic was top of the line! Depending on the game I use difference resolutions due to my videocard. HL engine stuff is usually at 1024x768 with a nice humming 90 hz, for ut2k4 I run good old 800x600 with a refresh rate of up to 120 hz! :D Good old Moniter
-

... 800x600? Ugh, you mean you're running a teeny tiny window just so you can have a high refresh rate? *sigh* Personally, I'd run it at 1280x1024 @ whatever the highest it can do at that res is
-
1024x768 here. NS doesn't seem to get any prettier if you go any higher, or at least that's my excuse :p . I play most brand new games at higher resolutions, but for some reason NS gets left behind. Oh well.
It could be a holdover of an old habit of keeping HL the same resolution as my desktop, because it was prone to crashing otherwise (and yes this was a long ways back).
-
1280x1024... But that's with 6xAA and 16xAF, so it's running a bit slow even on my Radoen 9700 Pro. I'd like to see if I reduce AA to 2x and AF to 8x performance, how 1600x1200 performs.
The issue here is not my videocard, but my tired old CPU.
I had planned to upgrade the whole bloody machine in time for DooM 3, but now the Radeon X800 XT PE, which SHOULD have been available in MAY, now might not show up in large quantities until OCTOBER, and forget about the PCI-Express version, which means I can't go for that new Shuttle XPC because it has a PCI-Express slot. So now I'm thinking it'll have to be some other Shuttle XPC with an AGP slot... and that will have to wait on the X800 XT PE. Blast.

1600x1200 on a 19 inch monitor.. 75Hz o_O
-
ns's graphics are modest to say the least. i wouldn't sacrifice frames for a higher resolution because it doesn't really add to my experience. the text is too small in any resolution higher than 1024x768 anyway!
