Alien Swarm

Quote
Alien Swarm is an overhead view tactical squad-based shooter for UT2K4. Set in the the distant future, the players take the role of a Commander in the Interstellar Armed Forces. They must guide their squad of marines through Swarm infested colonies, overrun bases and outposts, to achieve a variety of objectives. Featuring Assault Rifles, Heat Tracking Guns, Sentry Guns, Flamethrowers and more. Supports co-operative multiplayer.

A recently discovered mod that a number Lunix and Natural Selection players have gotten into. I've picked up a copy of Unreal Tournament 2004 since I got some extra cash for my birthday, and since people keep talking about how good this mod is. I have yet to get into a solid game, but so far its pretty spiffy from what I've played in the tutorial. Of course, UT2k4 itself is good, action-packed fun, and it makes for a nice break from my usual Counterstrike and City of Heroes gaming runs.

Anarki hosts a server for it depending on how many people want to play at the time, and we gather on IRC to chat about it. If you want any of the info on that, ask around in IRC, since it'd be advertising to post it here.

Woah.  So I'm confused, in 1 player mode you are the commander with a few computer controlled marines?  And if that is correct, in co-op mode, are there multiple commanders, or one commander with player controlled marines?

If it has an inventory system like Resident Evil Outbreak, I'm totally buying UT2k4.

EDIT: NM, agentorange filled me in

Yea, I noticed that when I woke up this morning. But its still good to have this one here, since not everyone in the forums is a res slotter (although it damn near seems that way).

eh.... if it was 1st person i think it would be better... seems like Diablo / WC3 set in the future <_< . And i for a fact didn't like any of the Diablo series which my parents bought for me for xmas 2 years ago. and do they automatically attack any nearby aliens? cause if they do that totally makes it seem like a "hero mission" in SC as Terran. And i hate hero/ limited guys in sc missions

Actually niteowl, theres always a leader/guy that tries to make people do the right stuff/stop jerkin around ... especially when i had a full 7,8 server yesterday and day before that ... i couldnt stop yelling at some people :D

and diablus , 1st person would just ruin it and make it like playin some Aliens game.. and each marine has to do his job not just stand around (but you can have a bot play a character if noones available to and have the bot guard while you complete the objective and stuff.

After playing on Anarki's server, I've learned that I'm probably better off finding a pub, because at least in a pub its some random anonymous smacktard teamkilling me for 15 rounds on the same map in a row, rather than two or three individuals whom I thought were more trustworthy than that.

Just don't expect an AI-controlled teammate to turn around just because his motion tracker shows an alien behind him. He'll inform you that he has movement all right, but he won't turn around until the thing tries to remove his head.

Alien Swarm uses a unique death system, with which when someone dies, they stay dead for good, you cannot choose that marine for any future missions. I for one like this system, as it prevents the game from turning into Sven-Coop with long respawn times. With the system, people have a reason to be more careful, rather than rushing into things.

Anarki has a strong dislike for this system, thus whenever someone dies on a mission, its open season for anyone before he restarts the map. This becomes a major problem when only two people have the major killing weapons (The auto-aiming chaingun and the flamethrower), and thus earn more skill points to improve their weapons even more. So when it becomes 'open season', those of us that are only there for specific tasts like hacking computers or welding doors get slaughtered because we don't earn much along the lines of skill points, and when we do it usually goes to our specific skill. Such a situation asinine and aggrivating, and I would much rather either just restart the map or continue to the next mission with one of the leftover unchosen marines (assuming the game has less than 8 people).

yeah ... most of us dont like having to leave behind a dead character so we naturally started to finish each other off when a vital part of the team dies.
grimm just had a bad day i guess , but next time if you dont want to be stuck as the hacker which is basically a support character then ask .. ill gladly be the haxor cuz other than the explosives dudes thats the 2nd favorite i have.
but i mostly explained all the problems in alien swarm to grimm, mainly just stuff that the mod creators screwed up .. btw its beta 1 so what do you expect :p

and even leader said " Alien Swarm: complete with mood changes!" since plenty people get mad and pissy and yell when you have to replay missions over cuz people keep screwing up :p (but we have to deal with it until they fix the minor annoyances.)  ^_^

Make fun.  Im not a resslotter.  But I would still like to discuss AS with you guys.  I think its a pretty good mod.

definitely a break from the typical NS/CS/DOD type gaming.  I enjoy it.

Although its always good to come back to good ole LM and play with the likes of you.  I really enjoy playing with you guys.  It makes NS much more enjoyable.

Let me know if someone wants to try out some multiplayer on AS.  Im game.  Im still learning though :)

Dude, the shotgun is the biggest FF magnet in the game, it freaking GIBS people.  I've nailed AO and Sonic with it during "open-season" and they were auto gunners.
