General / NS 3.1 out tomorrow

Hey, look! Everything is still dead, can we bury the mod yet?

And go to what? That's the real problem.

Honestly, I've moved to CS:S. Yes, a form of the mod I left for NS. It's not brain surgery, but it's mindless fun in the right community, and I've found a pretty decent one. Well adminned, not overly modded, and great group of regulars. LM is/was that, but the game that brought us together has died. So, what do we do, go to something like CS:S/DOD:S with more appeal, or just close the community?

Horror movies 9 out of 10 suck. So I dont waste my time trying to find the 1 out of 10. If you enjoyed it, great, but I probably wouldn't.

I 'll just buy Wonka on DVD next week.

Yeah, you would if you don't so it's worth a try if you can get away with it :p.

Am I the only one who had to read that three times, and still doesn't get it?

Off Topic / Halo + Peter Jackson = A decent VG Movie?

From the article:

Yes. The Peter Jackson, Executive Producing the Halo film.
Needless to say I and the rest of Bungie are positively incontinent (Marty especially). But what really knocks us on our asses is we’re also getting the combined talent of the mighty men and women of WETA in the bargain. From fabricating Covenant weapons to building life-sized Forerunner structures to accomplishing shot after shot of complex live-action/CG integration – simply put, there’s no group of people we’d rather have realize the Halo universe on screen.
Indeed, I don’t think there’s another group that even could.

point of this thread btw, is that i hate how people look at the internet and all they see is piracy. what of the games? what of the actual information? what of the ability to speak to others so far away? so many good parts, dissapointing to see the focus on the set of people who decided to upload copyrighted stuff :(

There are now two uses for the internet: piracy and porn.

Honestly, how much conversation in-game, IRC, chat, etc. is NOT centered around piracy and porn? I see your point, but honestly, you don't realize how numb you are to constantly seeing porn or hearing about illegal movies/games/apps/music until you describe it to someone else.

For instance, my wife is beginning to use the internet for more than just shopping and simple gaming. Do you understand how hard it is to explain goatse to someone who has never been privied to graphic images foolishly clicked on?

How about the fact that there are 10 obsene images or links  for every valid one.
Think about it, in order to safely browse the net, you have to have a healthy understanding of bogus domains and/or sensibility about what you click, and even then, you see on average 3-4 bad images/sites/links in a given hour of web surfing. As much as I want to agree HD, I don't. Porn and piracy are rampant (edit: as are my spelling mistakes). I mean, some of the teens on our IRC channel have probably seen more detestable things in the last week than i have in my whole life.

That coupled with the fact that most online communities and IRC channels filled with teens and CS nubs are synonamously filled with porn links, foul language, and talk of piracy. It is rampant. And even though a few communities thrive without it, it's alot harder to find a community free of that garbage than to find one dedicated to it.

I was looking through ytmnd.com at random sites, and there was a comedic thing about myspace.com being down set to emo music, but then it showed real home pics of people who sliced their wrists open and such. I mean, thank God I'm not desensitized to the point that images like that don't bother me.  But how many times does a porn banner pop up while I'm searching for a no CD crack and I don't even notice it.  o_O

not that I've ever done that.

the main problem is the lack of immaturity(in general), i believe, for the community.

There is certainly no lack of immaturity in the online community...

I'm begininning to think copious amounts of testosterone and immaturity go hand in hand.

Blundering away the popularity of NS, which had the potential to become a blockbuster on the same level as Counter-strike, took an unprecedented level of sustained incompetency on their part, but eventually they pulled it off--it just took them a long time to do it, as with everything else they've never done.

Fixed.  :D

Sorry, the whole it's a free mod by volunteers on their own time excuse is not working. If I were an investor, and looking at UWE, I'd take one look at NS development and secure my money in some safety deposit box in the world's strongest vault guarded by hyenas who are fed just enough to stay strong with automatic sentry turrets NOT developed by UWE that actually could hurth something and place a restraining order on Charlie "Flayra" Cleveland from even coming near my country.

Look at it this way. The hacking aside, the update schedule is non existent, the management/administration has never been professional, and the dedication has been sporadic. I'm not saying the developers that have assisted haven't cared, I'm saying the whole organizational structure, the PR machine, and Flayra's decisions of what to include in NS and priorities in updates has been total crap. 2.0 was so promising until it was released, then 3.0 and co_ only detered the game further from what made it amazing.

Yes, I'm anal about this. yes, I've said my peace about this game more than I care to, but it astounds me the stupidity that has been displayed and ataking a potential break away blockbuster of a game and creating a mounding pile of rhino pewp, all the while being heeded by many players in the NS universe trying to help the developers by giving feedback on the direction of the game, only to see those opinions ignored.

elim, I hope your hard work and dedication to this community will be rewarded by the experiences we've shared.

Well, right now I'm looking to dual boot my existing machine once my new sweetness gets here.

however, I've toyed with the idea of resurrecting my old frankenputer just as a storage PC and router/firewall.

in short, my existing PC would dual boot XP/Linux and be a gaming/PC platform, frankenputer would be dedicated storage/firewall.

That's why I'm up to trying two different releases. I'm also interested in the differences between, Debian, KDE, and other cores/whatevers I'm hearing about?

I'm looking for good distros of Linux to immerse myself in it. I'm looking for two specific things, and if one distro can do that, great, but if I can do in more than one distro, let me know.

1: I'm looking for a good Windows replacement linux distro that has a functional GUI that could be used for internet/word processing/games/etc. It doesn't have to be completely newb friendly. I may be new to Linux, but not computers, so I want to find a distro that would run some windows apps and games the BEST.

2: I need to learn network permissions, even the possibility or domain management, but most importantly folder shares and user based permissions.

Now some linuxnub pre questions. Is there a GUI much like Windows to manage permissions, or is it command line based? Can I manage multiple Linux machines from one box (other than VNC or such). Can I install multiple NIC's into this box and use it as a firewall/router?

My plan is to learn Linux for my workplace, and to use a machine at home as a firewall/router and storage server. I need to see what linux is capable of as a server and as a workstation. I am well aware of software such as open office, but I'm not so up to date on how windows programs are run on Linux and with what success.

Thanks to all who help!

General / Dystopia demo
« on: September 13, 2005, 06:57:55 AM »
It seems NS could learn something from the Dystopia Dev team:

Quote
Our work doesn't stop here. Over the next week we hope to have an update ready
for release to fix up a couple of bugs which snuck through into the demo version. After this our next biggest priority is to release more maps.
There's no 3 month hiatus, no down website for long periods of time, and lots of communication of what's going on.

More than the loss of newness and excitement of the NS world, I think people are just as tired of the lack of dedication the dev team has had to the community (sorry, tanke), and especially the seemingly poorly organized UWE and Mod team.

I'm just as excited about the DYS team's communication and enthusiasm as I am about enjoying the game.

What do you think? Add to favorites:

I'm looking to replace my TSA Heavy Model Steam Skin with something a little less gritty.

What skin are you using now, and where did you find it?

How about a LM skin? Post anything you like and provide a link to it!
