Because I know lf isn't always fond of happy birthday threads, I am instead wishing everyone else in the community a happy lolfighter day!

Off Topic / You want this HL2 mod
« on: December 28, 2004, 08:02:08 PM »
This doesn't really fit in HL2 spoilers and I wanted everyone to see it, so here you go. If someone sees a reason to move it, go ahead. I don't have to worry about those hard moderation decisions here.  <3

Now, go get garry's mod for hl2. It allows you to just generally fool around with things... eh, it would take too long to explain.

Just check these out:

Oh noes barney, look out!

Kleiner fulfills his dream of becoming a ballerina.

Alyx does... something. Hell I don't know.

Anyway, go get the mod. It's funcakes. You'll want this map too: http://www.pcgamemods.com/9009/ Remember to put it in the maps folder for garry's mod. Now post your amazing screenshots.

Edit: Map's not really needed anymore, gmod now includes a neat construct map to play around in, with a spawner for almost every ragdoll in the game. But the buildingblocks map has more interesting terrain, so go with whichever makes you happy.

Off Topic / Dawn Of War
« on: September 23, 2004, 09:07:17 AM »
Anyone got a copy of DoW? It's automatic awesomesauce because it's the warhammer 40k universe. Of course, you may not appreciate this if you don't know what it's like to spend five hours paining one miniature to perfection only to look and realize that you've still got another 30 miniatures in your army that are still unpainted.

But now you too can play, no paint fumes required. (This may be a disadvantage, depending on your point of view) For an RTS, it's actually quite well done. The focus is much more on battle than on resource gathering like, say, WC3. The power resource is gained by building plasma generators, and then just leaving them alone. And then there's a sort of strategic resource that's gained by capping strategic points and holding them. (Kinda like NS res towers) So the team that controls more of the map can build faster, and push out more, and so on. Makes for lots of fast action. Plus, the engine is quite amazing, and seeing a group of 30 space marines go charging into an ork horde, backed up by mighty dreadnoughts and heavy tank support is a sight that makes anyone's inner nerd geek out with glee. You can zoom down to the level of the battlefield and check out the detail on individual faces.

My point being, it's a really fun game. So does anyone have it?

Mapping / Ns_achio
« on: August 05, 2004, 12:20:17 PM »
We need this map. Here's the ns.org thread about it. It's a huge thread, I suggest just perusing the first few posts to get the idea. I've been watching this map's progress for months and months and kouji is FINALLY releasing a full version. I'll happily hump the leg of the person who can get this map on the server for me, ASAP. (Jhunz, I'm looking at you{r leg})

The map is a ship that was damaged by impact with meteorites, and the damaged and broken hallways are modeled in the map. Very hot and sexy. Several neat custom textures, a very nice custom skybox, some sweeeeet custom sounds, an all around awesome map. I'd just like to play it with real people to see how balance is on it. So, let's do it!

Media / Oekaki Board
« on: July 27, 2004, 01:31:43 PM »
OekakiPoteto can be downloaded here: http://www.suteki.nu/files/oekakip-5.1.0a.zip

If we want to try it out, of course, we'd need hosting space for it. For an example of your average oekaki board just go type oekaki in google and click any link that comes up. I'm having a bit of trouble finding documentation on it, though. So if we do try it out, I'm not sure if that download includes everything we'd need to run it properly. If anyone can find more extensive documentation, that might help. I know there's software called paintbbs and that it somehow extends off of the oekakipoteto software as well... So yeah, consider this an effort at a start anyway.  :D

Off Topic / Jumping Rant
« on: July 16, 2004, 02:45:10 PM »
Seriously. How realistic is jumping in half life or any of the mods to date? It's not. At all. No one gets into a gunfight and jumps around like a madman in an attempt to dodge bullets. Intelligence says you'd dive for cover, but only a few mods have coded diving of any sort, and that's diving for stunt appeal,  and not so much for getting out of someone's crosshairs. Fighting terrorists? Jump out from a corner and shoot them in the head in midair. Fighting aliens? If they get near you, start bouncing around, they won't bite you then, haha! Fighting monkeys? Evil rabbits? Demons? Nazis? Jump, Jump, JUMP!!! And once you allow jumping to stay in the game, you have to balance around it. I'd love to see a game without any jumping at all.

How would I get around the map? I hear you ask. Let me ask you this. For all the realism mods there are out there, compare them to the realistic 'map' (AKA the world around you) that you've been walking through all day long. How many times today, in the area that you've walked through (which is probably orders of magnitude bigger than any HL map could ever hope to be) have you ever needed to be able to jump four feet in the air and 6 feet horizontally in order to clear a gap so that you could go about your daily life? How many times have you actually JUMPED in the last week? Month? YEAR? (jumping rope for exercise doesn't count, you dolt) I'd just love to see a game that purported to be realistic and was designed around no jumping whatsoever. Or extremely realistic jumping. e.g. - that soldier with 100 pounds worth of gear, ammo, and weaponry on his back being able to jump about six inches in the air and having a good chance of spraining his ankle on the way down. Not to mention completely losing your ability to aim a weapon if you're bouncing while you do it.

I don't particularly hate jumping, mind you. I just got off on a rant and didn't know when to stop. And it's better than working.

Off Topic / Doom 3 Goes Gold
« on: July 14, 2004, 04:21:12 PM »
As reported in this article, along with about a million others, doom 3 has just gone gold. It's on its way to retailers and supposed to be released august 2nd. Maybe this will make valve bust out and release their game already, too. At least it'll give us something to play in the mean time.

In other news, as reported nowhere at all, duke nukem forever has not gone gold. No one at all is reported to be surprised by this complete lack of news.

Off Topic / Post Levels
« on: June 30, 2004, 09:15:10 AM »
I've never seen a post on this in all the time here. What are the different postcount levels? Like, uninstalled, make config, and so on. The highest I saw was make dep. Usually by the time anyone gets more than a few hundred posts, niteowl has found a good title for them. So what would my generic title be right now if I didn't already have the custom? And are there levels higher? It's nice to have goals for your spam, after all. You can always use more teeny penguin icons.

Mapping / Lm Community Made Map
« on: May 28, 2004, 10:14:56 AM »
IRC: #lm-map

Since the last thread ran out of steam, I'm giving this one last try with a nice new shiny thread. Does anyone want to take part in an LM community made ns_ map? Anyone with anything to offer is invited. If you have no clue how to map, then you can help with layout and theme suggestions. Or backstory. Or cheerleading, or something! If you DO have mapping ability, that's also quite welcome.  :p

If anything comes of this, I'll edit this post to keep track of who's involved and who's working on what. So please list IF you can commit anything to this, and what you can commit. I'll attempt to work as an organizer, and of course as a mapper. I KNOW several of you have map skillz. Think of it this way: the more people we get involved, the more likely you can pass the difficult parts off to someone else. EH? EH????

Bob: Mapmonkey work, organization (hah!) etc.

Some people may not know him, although if you've played on the CS server at all you've seen him. He's also my cousin. So it's my fault he's shooting you all the time.

General / How Do I Make Ns Look Ugly
« on: April 23, 2004, 01:47:21 PM »
OK, so I'm up and running temporarily on a p3 700 with 192mb of SDRAM. NS chokes on it. I've still got my gf4 vid card, and that never had any big issues running NS before, so most likely it's the slow bus speed and ram that's giving me problems. But NS runs like crap right now. The closest I can come to decently playable framerates is by putting it in 640x480, and then it's just terrible. I feel like I can't see anything, and my crosshair takes up half the freaking screen.

So what are some things I could tweak so that I could run in at least 1024x768 without having my frames drop to 5 every time I try to go into battle?  :help:

General / Broken Motherboard
« on: April 19, 2004, 11:10:02 PM »
Yeah I was playing on the CS server tonight and in what I believe was probably a message straight from the lord almighty, my computer died. I applied my massive technical knowledge and finally came up from the innards of my computer gasping for air and holding aloft a broken motherboard. Le sigh.

So I've got an RMA request in with MSI now, but I know how MB manufacturers work and I probably won't be able to get back up and running for at least two weeks. If I panic I might try and install NS on my girlfriend's computer here, but I kind of doubt it'll work. (does NS even run in software mode?) So I'll spam up the forums whenever I can, but otherwise I'm out of the game for a little while.

In conclusion:  :(

General / What's On Your Radio?
« on: April 13, 2004, 05:27:38 PM »
So? What are some good mp3 radio stations that I should add to my playlist? I've never had a good excuse to listen to mp3 radio before now.

Also, for those that are wondering, hlrally has a built in mp3 player. Just bind a key to mp3player to bring it up. You can either interact with your mouse or bind a bunch of other keys to next, back, pause, etc. Works just like winamp. And to change your playlist, just go edit the playlist.pls file in your hlrally folder.

Finally, after waiting YEARS for this freaking mod to release a playable version, beta 1 is actually COMING OUT TOMORROW!!! Dance and sing with me! Online multiplayer racing game with the half life engine! I DARE you to tell me you're not excited by the concept. Ohhh yeah baby. It'll be SWEET.

Mapping / Unnamed Co Map
« on: April 01, 2004, 11:52:59 PM »
Yep, I finally stopping thinking about doing some mapping and started doing some mapping. YES, it's a co map. Deal with it. I'd rather cut my teeth and make my mistakes on an easy co map than on a full on NS map. That'll come afterwards. At the moment, I have naught but MS built. Here's a little screenie, though, to give you an idea of what it's shaping up to thus far:

(Yes I know the CC is pitch black for some odd reason, I'm working on that)

I figure making a thread about it will keep me working if I ever slack off. So remember, if I don't update every once in a while, harass me!

OMG it's fatty's birthday. (unless you live somewhere west of me at the time I'm posting this, in which case it's still yesterday... but it will be fatty's birthday soon, work with me here)

So happy birthday to fatty, eat lots of caek and pai and get fatty-er.

Your traditional birthday squiggle:

General / The Third Hive
« on: March 09, 2004, 09:36:10 AM »
I've noticed a trend on LM lately of getting two hives up for DC and MC and those useful second hive abilities, and then just rushing for the end game right then. Has anyone else noticed this? More often than not when I ask if anyone's got the third hive, no one speaks up, and no one seems to care one way or the other.

So I ask you, is the third hive really even worth it anymore? We can all pretty well agree that the third hive abilities are little more than amusing toys. By the time you can get that hive up the marines are teched up enough that your abilities are useless anyway. I mean, I'd take the second hive abilities over the third hive abilities ANY day. Meta, BB, leap, umbra, and stomp are all MUCH more useful than AR, web, xeno, primal, and charge will ever be. Kinda sad, isn't it? It seems that by waiting the extra time it takes to get the 3rd hive up, you're only allowing the marines extra turtle time to tech up further. And it's generally agreed, I believe, that hive 3 aliens are no match for top tech marines. The extra armor boost, while nice, is crap compared to level 3 weapons. And getting sens up? Let's be honest, unless it's your first chamber and you play it right, sensory is nothing more than a novelty. Focus actually makes it take longer to take down structures, which is your goal in end game. You can't cloak your way into MS, as they'll do doubt have an obs. The main use at that point is SoF, which is occasionally useful for catching the ramboing escapee. Or just drop some OCs in the hallways and keep an eye on the exits.

So my suggestion to aliens: Forget that 3rd hive. You don't need it. Time is much more important than a 3rd hive. Get the second one up and then rush before they can tech! Comments?

Off Topic / Tornadoes!
« on: March 04, 2004, 01:55:15 PM »
Hooray, it's tornado season again! Tornado just hit a city west of here and is now headed this way.

Actually... I was just told it's weakened to just 40-80 mph straight line winds. That's no fun.

Well, anyway, it's tornado time again in Oklahoma, so if I suddenly go afk and you hear the sound of a freight train over the voice comm, don't worry, I'll be right back in the game as soon as the water drains and the power comes back. I'll just use this thread for fun updates on tornadoes as they strike. Since tornado season in Oklahoma seems to last from about march until... march of the next year, watch this space for updates on the mayhem. Anyone else live in a natural disaster prone area?

Off Topic / My Fps Is Teh Sux0r
« on: February 26, 2004, 04:59:14 PM »
I've been enduring this for months and finally I'm bored enough here at work to try and do something about it! My problem is thusly: in won HL I easily got 100 fps everywhere. In steam HL, it caps out at about 60 fps. This is any game, not just NS, so it's not the uber NS maps that are doing it (except frickin' co_rebirth with its 20 fps max in some areas... but I digress) it's probably something in my config.

Now in WON HL, I know I had a few command line tweaks that were making my FPS more happy. In steam, it seems impossible to put in any command line arguments. Your options seem to be 'run the game', and that's about it. If I were at home right now, I would probably mess with it myself, but since I'm stuck at work for a bit longer, I decided I would post here and let some of you geniuses tell me your magic tricks. This way, by the time I get home I won't have to work at it nearly as hard.  :p

Oh, and the vid card is an Nvidia GF4 TI4200, 64mb. I know it's not that great, but this is still the HL engine we're talking about. It shouldn't need all that much. Now, fix my problems for me! (ahh, it feels so nice to be the one saying that for once, instead of the one having that yelled at him)
