General / Why the SourceForts server quite honestly sucks

I was over on Free SunnyD today, and was horrified to see that it was so badly set up that it was virtually unplayable.

First of all, gravity was WAY too high, making it virtually impossible to navigate even slightly rough terrain. Some of the maps have bumpy terrain, and what were normally little bumps to jump over became insurpassable obstacles! This is, quite honestly, stupid. Set the gravity back to normal!

The second problem is in the server's network setup. The sv_maxrate seems to be way too low, as I was getting mad choke at anything over cl_updaterate 20. Even setting it down to 20 wasn't enough; while this eliminated most of the choke (Was still seeing 20% choke even at cl_updaterate 20), the server was still laggy as hell.

To be honest, trying to play on the server was so frustrating due to the incredible lag and rediculous gravity, that I will not be playing on Free SunnyD until it is resolved. Until then, regular Lunixmonster NS and non-broken SourceForts servers for me

Off Topic / I need beta testers

I've written a sort of file-upload service that is designed to be like http://www.putfile.com, but for text files (HTML/JS/CSS/TXT/etc).

I've even contacted the guy who runs PutFile, since we've communicated in the past via the ServerMatrix forums. The guy is interested in cross-promotion (He directs people to me as the text solution, I direct people to him as the media solution.

The problem is, before he'll start this up, I need to beta test! I need to make sure my site is relatively stable before hundreds of thousands of people start banging on it.

So please, take a look at the site (URL follows), bang on it, TRY to break it, use it, whatever! Just try to find things wrong so I can fix them

General / HL2DM rocks!

I had a little break in Oracle class today, so I fired up HL2DM for the first time.

I didn't have any sound (Couldn't disturb the class), and I was aiming with a trackpad... But wow! Great fun!

I ended up using the gravity gun most often, even when I could have killed a guy faster with a gun. The gravity gun is just way more FUN to use, and gaming is all about fun, not winning

General / Please Remove Password

Perhaps, when nobody is playing on the server or there's not a "community event" like a compstomp going down, the password could be removed. With the password on an empty server, it's very hard to just hop on and play in the middle of the day. When there was no password the server would be at least half full with random people, allowing for a drop-in game.
