so after taking several years off from playing dod, i played the source version yesterday.  i have to say that i enjoyed it thouroghly.

My love affair with the mg42 seems to continue as if it were yesterday..

but i miss other things like the bayonette and the semi auto german sniper rifle.( i know its been gone for a long time but man)

any way any thoughs and or complaints?

i have to say that it runs rather nicely on my machine, around 50 fps most of the time. It seems to gradually creep down but its only noticable after aoubt 8 hours...

I mean, I  didnt spend all of yesterday playing this game... oh wait, yes, I did.

Well, obviously ..

it seems there is a man called biggles who in the end does in fact deliver the goods.

in this case sadly the goods are 500,000 tons of rubber.

however i find the titles of teh 98 books he stars in hilarious and and felt like sharing. they come with fashionable illustrations and everthing

Mapping / Source forts: suggestions
« on: August 11, 2005, 11:22:06 PM »
Ok, today i decided to make a source forts map.

i havent played it very much yet. So, i have some important questions.

1. How big should the map be? right now the server is running at 10 players max and that is my target. how small is too small?

2. how much should separate the forts, or, should I have a no mans land?

3. should there be a way to get around the forts? like the rafters in that one level?

4. any one object to outside?

5. why did the soviets have to make such freaking huge nucler reactors?

finally,

6.  Why does it seem like no one who maps for this game understands vis?

also if you have an additonal suggestion, please let me know.

So i says to mabel, i says, mabel... oh, wait, wrong story.

the truth is that the other day i was very bored at work and decide to ask my staff this question in hopes of hearing something utterly ridiculous. i did but that is beside teh point. the real goal is to pick a super villian you would like to be. and then explain why, preferably ripping on the other villains weaknesses in the process.

finally have fun. Be creative.

and no Antonio Banderes is NOT a Super hero despite teh attestations of TexasMaTT.
Even if he could kick Dr Dooms butt.

Off Topic / Coffee Game
« on: May 20, 2005, 03:11:42 PM »
Ok, as some of you know i am a restaraunt manager.

At work we have 5 coffee pots arranged in the following manner

{decaf}{regular}{regular}{regular}{regular}

As the day goes on pots of regular are pulled until ultimately only 3  remain two regular and one decaf. ( if this seems excessive, please note that during breakfast this is roughly a five minute supply of  coffee, and that by teh tim i left work this after noon we had sold 1300  orders in 9.5 hours)

Normally one would assume that the pots would be labeled by the type of coffee contained therein. However, the store I work at is to insane for that. Thus, they are both labeled  and color coded. Decaf is tagged either yellow or pink. Regular is on white paper. (The labels have the time the coffee is too cold to serve, 2 hours after it has been brewed)

long ago some one hit on the idea that regular and decaf were crappy things to write and thus the game was born.

The four Regular pots will have  4 related thing written on them.
The fifth, the decaf pot, has a word which is similar but different .

the goal is to figure out why the decaf word doesn't fit.

the pots are removed by the same person who wrote them, the shift manager, thus the final 3 pots should demonstrate the difference better than the initial 5.

To play the game on the forum one will start with 5 pots

demonstrated as shown
Code: [Select]
{decaf}      {regular}     {regular}     {regular}    {regular}
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gorbachev|   Lenin    |    Stalin   |   Brezhnev  |  Krushchev

in order to simplify the  regular pots will be removed from right to left, Resulting in the final group being  lenin ,stalin and gorbi.

(the connection here Soviet leaders, the exception ended teh union.)

finally this is the l ast trio fo todays coffe pots at work:

(think c++)

so the follwing thread is hopefully to make us all try to out fox each other in teh coffe game.

the person who gets the connection of the preceeding  examples gets to set up th next set of pots.

So, this is the  puzzle:
Code: [Select]
{decaf}      {regular}     {regular}     {regular}    {regular}
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tsushima  |    Kursk   |  Leningrad  |   Berezina   |  Khalkin-Gol

General / The Basics: Commanding

Confused Guides™: The Basics: Commanding a Team

So you are looking at the chair and thinking “Man, I Could be as awesome as Confused! as a comm.” Let this author be the first to tell you that no one can in fact be as awesome as Confused!. However, this should not discourage you greatly.

To achieve greatness as a commander one must simply  follow the guide laid forth here and suddenly the command chair will not only seem a good place to hang out but also nearly as appealing as O’Neil’s Irish pub on mug night. Oh, sweet mug night.  Which leads us to the first problem of becoming commander. That is getting into the chair.

First it is very important to be alive when attempting to comm. For some reason, one has little authority over the team when dead. This is equally true after the first 30 seconds of the game have elapsed. However back to the problem of getting into the chair. It is key to be alive and not afk at the beginning of the game or else ns player will get in the chair and pull some insane strategy. To facilitate this “liveness” one should consistently join the marine team before the beginning of the game countdown. I know it is tempting to hangout in the ready room with the guys and hit on chicks, much like one would, say, at mug night. However, this doesn’t get you into the chair or the game in the live state.

Once you have joined the game one should inform the other marines that you intend to command. Generally this is accomplished  via rapidly changing ones weapons during the ping. In some cases however players have been known to use voice and even text chat, however this is generally considered poor form and can lead to the Race of Destiny to be canceled.

Which brings us to the Race of Destiny. Should your rapid weapon switching fail to intimidate potential rivals. You have no choice but to out run them. Racing to the chair is a time honored tradition. However one should aware of the various distractions along the way to success.

First one should look out of the guys rushing randomly out of base. They are easy to avoid but also implacable in their attempts to escape the base. They are not truly competition merely obstacles. They are usually easy to escape.

The next Problem is the guys who rush to the cc and stand around threatening to jump in (NSplayer: can I comm.? How do I build? Can I comm?). The confined spaces around them are the keys to success in the Race of Destiny. Maneuvering over, under, and around these players is a mark of true skill.

Sometimes one of these players will take the chair before you can evade him and thus end the Race of Destiny prematurely. In some cases tehse players can be in the pockets of the competition and “just build an IP” this leads to the final skill required to take the CC. that of frantically humping it while Mr. McNewbish tries to figure out how to drop an IP. Some consider not voice and text spamming here to be a mark of  a lack of  professionalism and an attempt to make the team play like it is from the bush leagues.

The final key is still the frantic last ditch attempt to pry the Comm out by force of will alone. Practice pressing E 5000 times a minute in order to over come the last obstacle to your reign of terror.

Now that you have won the Race of Destiny you are now able to perform your sacred duty of force feeding the aliens human flesh.

To begin with one should always have plan. Generally for the new commander you should use one of the three following stratagems: Plan A, Strat 1, or “Oh God what am I doing”™. Of the preceding three the last is most common in new commanders. The plan has significant flexibility as well as the significant advantage of not being threatening to the aliens. If this were a made for TV romantic comedy it would be grade A awesome. However, this is the cold hard dangerous environment of online gaming where the stakes are high. The alien team should tremble in fear as you command not think “Oh that CC looks so cute.”  Regardless the first few times you take the chair you will likely follow this strat.  One must practice this strat until it is perfect. Without understanding such commanding basics as the relationship between Cat packs and Testicular cancer one cannot truly begin to execute either of the other basic strategies. It is recommended that when performing the “Oh God what am I doing”™ Plan. One should rely heavily on the member of your team with the loudest microphone transmit volume. His loudness is an indicator of character. Further any complaints from your team should be dealt with by ignoring them. Further the following technologies and upgrades are notable absent in this strategy: Armor1, Weapons1, Motion Tracking, and, in some cases, Resource Towers. The upgrades are entirely too expensive and while following this build order should be only purchased after turrets, electrification, and Heavy Machine Guns with out which the team will be guaranteed failure. As further cost cutting measure med packs and ammo should under no circumstances be dropped. Nor should multiple copies of any building with the slight exception of turrets. Turrets are amazing base defenders and must be deployed in as many areas as possible. Their use is vital to marine success in this stratagem.

Common features of this Plan include:
•   Writing the commander’s name in turrets on the floor of the Marine Start
•   Writing the commander’s favorite swear word in turrets on the floor of the Marine Start
•   Watching the marine team get eaten.
•   Mistakenly recycling the Observitory.
•   Asking why the marines don’t have HMGs yet.
•   Jumping out of the chair to run to one’s mommy only to be eaten by Mr. Onos

After following the above a few times one will likely have learned a few things. First among them, that the marine team sucks and that the aliens will always win. This is a very important lesson in becoming a good comm. The Marines do, in fact, suck. In fact the aliens see them the same way you see a side of beef with a bit too much hot sauce on it. It might hurt a bit but you are going to get it down even if it makes you cry. It is with this in mind that the next strategy comes about. This is the world famous Plan A. this should not be confused with Kid A, who is sitting over there.

----- To read more buy the Confused Guide To Commanding for just 57.99-------

Exerpts form teh follwing sections:

"Give out shot guns. This will make the marines behave like kids on Christmas. Any marine who complains should be ignored as a party pooper. Seriously, who doesn’t like having a nice shot gun? Many comms have been known to send this heavily armed group of 12 gauge enthusiasts to a single point. However, this is a significant problem because the number of marines available to patrol the map is lowered. Thus, the number of bullets available for immediate use in any square meter area declines. And as we all know amp control is calculated in the amount of bullets with in 3 seconds of an alien’s stomach."

I am using the ns_remix wad which has been roundly criticized by the nsmapping community. While I generally ignore most of their input, this time it may in fact be valid.  So I have genitivally decided to remix the remix. I have gotten the author’s permission and am planning on edit the textures.

My problem is that I am utterly incompetent at making a good looking texture. The ones I have played with have come out looking like cartoons, which is not bad, but not really the object.

My object is to rework the ns_remix wad particularly the gray texture set. This would consist of adding details which would not interfere with the whole but merely ad to them.
I was hoping for some sort of help on how to make this and have it look good.

i only ask becasue all the tutorials i can find are like "download wally. now paste your hot new texture in. go man! go!" or "so you are a studio art major? first take a picture of your 14 square foot oil painting paste into wally and go man! go!"

i hope its clear what im trying to getat.. it might not be. i dont know.

Scince im sure at least a few of you miss me. i thought i was a good time to wander in and tell you that i am alive. thats about all i have going for me right now :D

i have no pc. (im in a campus sun lab right now) this is due to a slight miscaluclulation on the part of some one who decided to run over the main board with his/her UPS truck. resulting in the board being DOA.The other problem is that as i bought the board through and employee and the problems seem to be wide spread, i may not infact be able to get a replacement and only a refund. However, this is only a slight problem as there is no internet at my current, and soon to be former adress.

Which brings me to the fact that i have been lving in an unfinished basment which seeps watter when it rains. and for those of you who live in other parts of the world thats been 4 times in the last week. to make matters worse teh plumbing above me is shoddy at best.

I'im not just saying that be cause it looks like I could do a better job with a blind fold on and a 6 year old tied to my back. the other day at 7 am the ceiling started to rain and kep doin so for 5 hours untill i finally went and did a little duct tape plumbing. un fortunately in the week i have lived in the basement this has happened twice, though the first time only for about 10 minutes.

so yeah thats what i've been up to.

for those of you who dont know doom three was released early in many places across the US and as of this post i know several people who claim to have beaten the game. i feel it is a decent idea to believe them as they have spent nearly 72 hours locked in one of my friend's appartment going nuts.

having just purchased a new video card (radeon 9800pro 256). i played a littel and am both impressed and disturbed.  i was wondering if any other persons have played teh game as yet and what their impressons of it were.   as i have only played about 30 minutes so far  my impression is fairly limited.

i was hoping to get some screens in but i am being lazy and so ill get those in later.lua i have to go out:)

a few days ago i finally got a friend to play ns, and i put him on the lunixmonster. It was his second day of playing ns, and when this was revealed certain community members began to complain about "having the noob on our team".  This occured at the beginnings of several maps both ns_ and co_ and led to my friend suggesting that we leave and go play co_ spacefall again on a more noob friendly server. in the end the offending party and several jokes were made at his expense. and the uber pea stayed in the game.

At the time i dismissed this as a fluke of being up at 4 am and didnt  worry to much about it. however, today i was involved in a similar situation.

so i thought i should post and complain to you all and remind you that we are a fun,  noob friendly server, which is why i bring new players here and suggest they play here.

so if you made fun of a noob,  think about it and please don't do it again.

(think of the childerens: one day they could grow up to be ninjas)
