General / Big trouble installing NS
« on: March 30, 2005, 10:31:25 AM »
I got a new computer set up last week  <3  but I'm having trouble getting NS installed.  I first installed HL from the disc, then tried to install NS3.  Realizing my error, I then installed Steam, and tried to install NS again.  Realizing my error again, I activated HL1, went into a game there, then quit, and tried to install NS again.  This time it should have worked, but I think something from the previous installs are messing things up.  The install goes through its motions, says its successfully installed, but it never appears on my games list (Third party games isn't even a choice list in Steam).

I've been through the instructions in the Tech Support forum about installing.  It doesn't matter how many times I try, it goes through successfully, but never shows up in the list.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Off Topic / Warcraft tribute song!
« on: December 15, 2004, 10:35:39 AM »
When I was fixing up my gf's computer last night I went through a bunch of old files and found something I thought was lost forever.  Back earlier this year my roommates and I all played Warcraft, and especially DOTA (Defense of the Ancients, if you've ever played a custom game of WC3 you've at least heard of it) allllll the time.  One day they were playing while my gf was using my computer to play with them, so I was just sort of hanging out, strumming a guitar.  Eventually I started being goofy and improvised a song about DOTA!  My roommate started singing along, making up his own verses.

A couple days later we wrote down some of the words we made up, filled in the gaps, and recorded it!  It's a one take recording and I can't sing or play guitar worth a damn, but it's still fun.   :)

My fiancee's computer is totally fuxxored.  She has some kind of spyware/adware which acts more like a virus, and I haven't been able to fix it.  I believe it started with a trojan called Winshow (http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pe...px?id=453076071) and I tried to combat that to little success with various programs and following instructions to manually remove it.  The article says that it may download and run unsigned code, and I fear that this program may have put worse stuff on her computer.  Now almost all the time there are processes: either drvurl.exe or comftp.exe (either or, never both at once) that are running and sucking up >50% of the CPU resources and lord knows how much virtual memory.  Also full-screen popups occur, triggered by certain strings in web pages; for example, ads for anti-spyware software when the word spyware is on a page (this is a confirmed effect of Winshow).

Anybody heard of this stuff before?  I can't find anything online that can fix it.  Adaware and Spybot try to fix stuff, but never work.  If I can't figure out something soon, I'm going to buy a new hard drive for a fresh install.

Off Topic / Need Web Hosting
« on: November 04, 2004, 07:13:55 AM »
My university accounts will be shutting down soon because I graduated in May, so all my pretty picture hosting needs to find a new home.  Does any one know any free or cheap services for this?  I need something reliable, so I'd rather pay $5 a month for something decent as opposed to a free service which barely works.

General / A Request
« on: October 06, 2004, 10:28:18 AM »
I've got a request to ask the community.  Next time one of you is playing marines with me commanding, could you record a demo?  I've always wanted to see this to improve my game, and to see how understandable I am over voice comm and if I voicespam too much.  Preferably a real game, not some silly 2v2 :)

Thanks folks!   <3

General / Relocation Gallery

It's up!  Thanks to Mr. Bill for the inspiration.  Please submit your additions!  :D  I wish I'd been taking screenshots for months, this would be so full.  I'm taking everything from devastatingly powerful to "Worst. Relocate. Ever" style relocations.

And please, DO NOT derail this thread into anti-relocate or "don't hijack the game" mishmash.  Those who play with me know that when I comm, I don't often relocate, and when I do a silly one it's out of desperation or at the request of the team.  For example, the Landing Pad relocate only happened AFTER they got 3 hives up and there were fades at every exit to MS.

Mapping / Warcraft 3 Map
« on: August 12, 2004, 10:52:34 AM »
H'okay.  This is a map I finished circa June 2003, released it, it made its way throughout Bnet and got great reviews.  Then 1.10 comes out and completely and utterly breaks it.  I manage to get it about half fixed, but never managed to get it fully functional.  I ran across the 12-page bug and task list when moving apartments last week and was like "Damn.  I spent a large chunk of my life on that."  So I'd like to know if there's any interest in the community for me to go back and put this thing back together.  If you still play WC3 and think it'd be worth my time, post in this thread and let me know.  :)

It's a 4-player FFA RPG.  Each person selects a party of 4 heroes out of 6 hero types.  They then explore the world independently and compete to be the first to finish the various quests, which gives them Honor points.  Also, if two players' parties encounter each other, they will battle and the winner will also receive honor.  After all of the various quests of FF1 are complete and the final boss is defeated, the player with the most honor wins.

Here's a couple of sample screenshots (of single player mode)...

Ain't he purty?

Boss battle.

Another boss battle.  The minimap is revealed in this one (indoor areas are far north and far south).

The Black Wizard's ultimate spell, Nuke.  :)

Yay!  No more uber crackle, no more "pleeeeease comm, stop talking," no more incessant voice spam made twice as bad by hideous noises (well I won't make any promises on the spam part  ;) ).  Die, nForce2!

General / More Mic Problems...
« on: May 14, 2004, 06:27:41 AM »
I know there's tons of topics on this, but I haven't seen any to solve this issue.  I figure I've been around long enough that at least some of you can recall my grating static-filled voicecomm (strangely enough, the only people to complain so far have been british...).  The mic itself is fine, it's only Halflife that causes any problems.  I've asked folks about it before, changed my cl_updaterate and something else, this fixed the cutting-out but the static is still going strong.  Any ideas?

Btw, when I start NS usually there's a lot of static in all the sounds, which corrects itself after about a minute.  I THINK all of this is Steam, but I'm not sure (can test later if it's relevant).
